Cisco-Linksys HPRO200 HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router Review

Cisco-Linksys HPRO200 HomeLink Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the Linksys HPRO200 Phoneline 10M Cable/DSL Router and am very happy with its' performance.Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system.Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.

AT&T EP5995 - 5.8GHz Expandable Cordless Answering System with Dial-In-Base Speakerphone Review

Average Reviews:

After reviewing cordless phones and looking at them, We picked this one based on consumer report and buyer reviews in addition to features and looks of course. We also needed a multi handset system and this one can support up to 8 handsets. We also needed a system that would not interfere in our wireless computer network. We had a multi handset system which was 2 years old but did interfere and would often cause problems. This was super easy to install and set up. It is similar to using a cell phone and has many of the same features. We love the ability to display pictures and animations along with being able to name each handset which we named for each room they belong in. We have always had problems with knowing where our old handsets belonged and would have to find the empty base from which it had been taken. Another cool feature is that you can record your own music or sounds for your ringer if you want. We also love the intercom capability which our old system had but this is much better. We have had these for almost a month and have had no problems with them or any of the functions or features. We have not set up our directory yet so don't know how that part works yet. The handsets are a little larger than our old ones but still very nice looking and the small bases are very stable which is much better than our old ones. The base unit is excellent in that it is really easy to use all the features on it, it has buttons so you can use the base without the handset which is always nice to be able to answer your phone when someone forgot to replace the handset! It also has a battery storage place which takes the same battery as the system and will allow your base unit to work in case of a power outage. We didn't realize this when we purchased this but would have bought the extra battery at the same time had we known.

Parrot CK3100 LCD Bluetooth Car Kit Review

Parrot CK3100 LCD Bluetooth Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I played with one of these at Best Buy and thought the display was hard to read and the knob and buttons felt cheap. When I ordered my unit I got the newer all BLACK version display panel and these things have been improved.I chose the 3100 model because I realized I don't have a lot of space on my cars dash to put a lot of displays.

I ordered mine with not just a custom wiring harness for my 1998 Accord EX, but with a custom wiring harness which includes prewired mute configuration (quickconnectproducts dot com).I was dreading having to run the wiring for power until I realized I didn't have too!!The power is also automatically taken via the wiring harness from the power going to the radio.I installed it myself in about 1 hour.

The Parrot has some thoughtful ergonomic design.Very functional. For example, when you turn your key ignition off while on a call, instead of going dead and dropping the call, it continues to to stay on and asks you if you would like to transfer the audio back to the phone! How cool is that.

Audio quality is great.First, unlike my 2008 RAV4 factory bluetooth which is very good, the Parrot is FULL DUPLEX which means both of you can talk at the same time which allows much smoother conversations. It has the magic DSP background noise elimination so callers don't hear the road noise. All the echo is cancelled as well, and your voice is processed to remain strong and loud despite being distant from the microphone.Callers tell me I sound like I am directly talking on the phone and not on a speaker phone. The Parrot audio amp which sends sound to the car speakers does have a small amount of high frequency hiss/noise in the background; however this isn't a problem as you can only hear it when the engine is shut off.

Even though the Parrot doesn't have an interface for your steering wheel controls (I don't have them anyway), you can still operate some of the key functions via voice recognition.Because the Parrot voice recognition limits you to half a dozen voice commands, they actually work!

The 2-3 line display of the Parrot CK3100 is plenty of display for me.Some users may not even need a model with a display. The display indicates phone battery charge and cellular signal strength, although on my Palm Treo 700p with Verizon the cell signal strength is not accurate as displayed on the CK3100 display.

Mounting the display and microphone for these types of devices in a car is always a challenge. However, the Parrot kit includes several different mounts for both the display and microphone. Some quite unique and helpful. The best assortment of actually useful mounting hardware I have seen.

When talking on my cell phone while driving, I am aware that my attention is diverted.I don't like it.So for some time now I have used a Plantronics headset (great product). That improved the situation some but then I tried talking via bluetooth speakerphone in our 2008 RAV4.Talking on speakerphone is VERY different. It is much safer in my opinion. It is just like talking to the person sitting next to you in the car.I would encourage everyone who wants to be a safer less distracted driver while on the cell to get a GOOD QUALITY FULL DUPLEX speakerphone for their car.The Parrot 3100 fits the bill.

Turn on the car engine and the phone connects wirelessly to the Parrot CK3100 Car Kit. Belkin Wi-Fi Phone for Skype with Boingo Hot Spot Manager ( F1PP000GN-SK ) Review

Belkin Wi-Fi Phone for Skype with Boingo Hot Spot Manager
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Being someone who uses Skype constantly for both business and personal long distance and PC-to-PC phone calls, I got a Belkin Wi-Fi Phone for Skype as a Christmas gift from a loved one who knows just how nerdy I am when it comes to new gadgets. I love them!

Unfortunately, I can only say that I *like* the new wi-fi phone from Belkin. Appearance-wise, it's terrific with a sleek black case, color screen and attractive key layout. It's a good, comfortable size and feels about like a stylish mobile phone. It comes with a USB cable for charging and software updates, as well as a regular power cord for charging. You can use the phone while it's connected to the charger, which is what I find myself doing a lot.

The sound quality is good and it connected right to my household wi-fi system once I punched in the security code. The controls are easy to access and use. I was quite excited to get going with it and used it for several days without incident.

Then it froze. No matter what I did, the buttons made no difference and the screen stubbornly stuck on 11:38 a.m. and no amount of prodding would break it free. I looked for some sort of reset button like you get with a Palm or other PDA-like device, but there isn't one. I finally decided that the only way to get the baby to reset would be to take out the battery and put it back in.

Thus, my next problem. The battery cover refused to budge. It was as if it had been super-glued shut. I pulled, pushed, yanked but it held firm. I had no other choice than to resort to the proverbial waste of time - support.

Yep, total waste of time. I tracked down Belkin support, filled out the form to inform them of my problem (frozen screen, stuck battery case) and got an answer from some clueless girl telling me I should go into the menu and use the "reset" function. Duh? The SCREEN IS FROZEN, honey! How the heck am I supposed to do that!

So, back to pulling, tugging and yanking on the battery cover. I finally managed to pry one corner up and get enough leverage to get the darned thing open without breaking it. I pulled the battery out, the phone reset and I was up and running again.

My next disappointment came when I stayed at a hotel that offered free wi-fi. I had hoped to use the phone to make some calls, but, alas, the hotel requires you to open their web page in a browser before you can connect to their access. That's all, just open their page in a browser - no inputting codes or anything. Just an open browser.

The Belkin phone has no Internet browser, a terrible oversight for a product that people will want to use at Internet cafes and the like. Not a smart move, Belkin.

Yes, the phone is supported by Boingo, which has hotspots here and there. In my area, my choices are a UPS Store or an RV park. Somehow I can't see myself hanging around those to make phone calls. I'm out of luck at Starbucks, hotels and anywhere without completely open wi-fi access.

Another minor peave is the lack of Skype chat support. My company uses Skype chat a lot during the business day, so I can't plan on using the Belkin Skype phone exclusively for business because there's no chat support. I understand that trying to do chat on that itsy bitsy keyboard is difficult, but people send text messages all the time on cell phones, so there should be support for chat. If nothing else, I'd like to be able to set the phone up to let people know that I don't have Skype chat, try me on AIM or whatever.

Anyway, don't think I'm totally unhappy with the Belkin Wi-Fi-Phone for Skype. I'm not. It's great to carry around the house with me when I'm not on the computer. It just means I have to switch back and forth between it and a Skype-enabled computer quite a bit. I guess my suggestion for those considering one is to say that it's great if you just want a wireless Skype phone for home, have no need for Skype chat and don't plan on trying to use it too many places outside your home network. It's a shame, but it probably won't work for you on the road or in your neighborhood Starbucks.

Uniden EXAi5580 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone w/ Answering Machine Base Review

Uniden EXAi5580 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone w/ Answering Machine Base
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used Uniden cordless phones for years and years and have always been satisfied for the most part.I've used cordless phones at other people's homes which were made by other companies and they really didn't measure up, especially on the cheaper models.

I bought the EXAI5580 to replace both an older Uniden cordless and a fairly new answering machine that was completely inadequate because I couldn't skip through messages and couldn't change the maximum record time.

The 5580 does everything I need and more. The clarity is superb and better than my older Uniden phone. It's even removed excessive static on some calls - it sounds better than the corded phone! The answering machine records up to 4 minutes on a single call.(Anyone with a mother needs this feature.)You can even record up to ten minutes of a phone conversation, a feature I didn't even know the phone had until I read the instructions.

Just note that the phone itself is not digital (which would apparently make it more secure), but the answering machine is.For a completely digital phone you'll have to pay more.Still, for the price, this is probably the best cordless phone with an answering machine you can buy. This is easily one of the best cordless phones I've used in years - great features and a clarity I haven't experienced in years.

Have had this phone for a few months with 2 extra extensions. Like the slim design and "cool" blue light. Best feature for me is the speaker-phone which plays quite loudly and can be heard by the rest of the family w/o trouble. I also like the fact that you can assign the ringer to other family members...when the wife calls me it is the "William Tell Overture". I come in with Bach's "toccata and fugue in d". In silent mode, the phone lights up in blue only...nice in the home theater room so as not to be disruptive. All in all, sound quality is fair-good and the units diminuative size is nice...just be careful not to sit on it if left on the couch!

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA Review

USB MODEM UTSTARCOM 175 BROADBAND ACCESS PHONE CARD VERIZON CDMA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living out in the sticks, dialup internet access was what I had to live with for ages. When Verizon added a tower that improved my cell phone coverage, I started wondering if it was an option for my PC as well.I'm not an early adopter of new technology and waited until neighbors had tried various options before I was willing to try this service.I've been using an extra phone line for the computer, the removal of which will save me half what this service costs monthly.Still it's an extra thirty bucks, so it has to be worth it to me.

Some neighbors are using the satellite service but aren't completely satisfied. The only negative comment I got about this little modem and the service was that there is a limit on how much access you get--5 gig/mo--which means you won't be downloading movies or playing internet games much, if at all.Since this isn't an issue for me, I decided to give it a try.

It is definitely faster than dialup access even at the fastest dialup modem speed.I use AOL and the TCP/IP connect is about 3-5 times faster, then all that stuff they display loads much faster as well and I can go about my business without waiting for more than a few seconds. That said, the transfer rate doesn't compare with the Comcast speed of my daughter's setup in town. This service is faster than dialup, but not 'blinding' by any means. As an example, in the past when I tried to download something, I noted the transfer rate on dialup was something like 4-6k per second.Sigh!!Things took forever and sometimes wouldn't download at all.I downloaded the update for my Kindle last night with this little modem and noted 50k/sec transfer rate.Certainly a lot better.

The speed does seem to depend on 'how crowded the air waves' are (or however you'd say that in technospeak :) and how many bars you get.I've found the number of bars is the same as what I get on my Verizon cell phone.Where my desktop PC is located, it varies from 0 to 2.I have ordered the antenna in hopes of boosting that.

Installing the little modem is as easy as running the CD installation disk that comes with it and then plugging the modem into a USB port when prompted to do so.It also comes with a cable in case you want to plug into a port on the back of a desktop PC and set the modem somewhere with easier access. You can leave the modem attached all the time if you want.It turns off when you turn the PC off. When on, it flashes a blue light, which means it's ready to pick up a signal. To connect your computer to the broadband service, you use the modem software (push the 'connect' button), which to me, seems to be equivalent to turning your cell phone on (the modem has a phone number). It is then ready for you to 'make a call', i.e. connect to the internet using some software such as Internet Explorer or AOL.

You can leave the modem connected all day like you would leave your cell phone on and not affect the data limit since that only happens when you are connected to and using the internet. If you use the internet with your cell phone, you know there is a data limit with it as well. This is sort of the same thing.

The modem software will show you what your usage is each time you connect so you're aware of what you've used so far.Sending emails, Facebook updates, photos, etc uses part of your allocation, as well as downloading files, photos, etc.Various internet screen refresh activities uses some. Watching streaming video or playing games uses a lot. Listening to internet radio uses enough that you probably won't want to do that all the time. For me, after 5 days of email, Facebook postings, attempting to watch some short videos and listening to the AOL radio one day just to see what impact it would have, plus downloading the Kindle software update, posting a few Amazon reviews, and the like, I've used about 225mg, or about 50mg a day, so I should be able to stay within the limit easily with no change to my regular internet activities.

I still cannot really watch streaming videos such as those on YouTube with my 1-2 bar connectivity, without breaks while it reloads the next bit. Even though it reloads faster than before, I have to want to see it pretty badly to put up with that.

One concern: This morning there seemed to be a problem with the modem connecting to Verizon. It was resolved within half an hour and it is Black Friday, which may or may not have anything to do with it.I will update if that happens again, but otherwise it has connected fast and remained connected without problem.

Bottom line: It is definitely better than dialup--for me about 5 times faster. That's not seriously fast, but acceptable and worth the extra money to me, especially since I don't have any options other than satellite which is affected by weather, trees, and costs more as well.

Polycom SoundStation EX with Mics Review

Polycom SoundStation EX with Mics
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The quality and the clarity of this speaker phone is much better than using a typical speaker on a regular business phone. No problems with sound fading, etc. typically experienced on a regular business phone while talking. This was a very good purchase and investment to have because its cost is a little more than a regular business telephone. Great for meetings or for conference calls.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Polycom SoundStation EX with Mics

Product Description:
Meet all your teleconferencing needs with the full-duplex Polycom SoundStation EX, which includes two external microphones for extra coverage--ideal for medium- to large-sized rooms. With conventional, half-duplex speakerphones, only one party can speak at a time without clipping off the other party's voice. Echoes and howling can further disrupt your conversations and lead to costly misunderstandings. But because of the SoundStation's full-duplex operation, you can speak naturally and hear both sides of the conversation clearly.
The SoundStation EX ensures high sound quality with three microphones and a digitally tuned speaker for 360-degree coverage of an office or conference room. This EX model also has two external microphones on either side of the console for more than double the coverage of standard conference phones. The microphones come with two 6-foot round cables for connecting to the console.
Polycom's Acoustic Clarity Technology uses digital signal processing with analog telephone lines to eliminate the clipping and fading that plague most speakerphones. This technology improves speaker and microphone performance over the full bandwidth of the telephone line, 300 Hz to 3,500 Hz. Other features that boost sound quality include dynamic telephone-line echo cancellation and dynamic room-echo cancellation, signal depression, microphone switching, and digital filtering of voice signals.
The SoundStation EX has a full alphanumeric keypad for dialing with a mute button and flash key to access functions like hold, conference, and transfer. There is also an extra jack to plug in a tape recorder. Dual-colored LEDs signal phone status, and other controls include a ringer volume, speaker volume, and microphone mute.
The SoundStation EX works with any analog phone system, or with an adapter (sold separately) for digital phone systems. It comes with a wall module, 25-foot power cable, 7-foot telephone cable, and a one-year warranty.

Panasonic KX-TG5240M GigaRange Supreme 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System Review

Panasonic KX-TG5240M GigaRange Supreme 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I start my review, let me point out that I've been using Panasonic phones for years, and I'm quite familiar with their phones. And every time buying a new phone, another feature is missing. So to date, I have so many features missing, I wish I could get back to my old phone from 8 years ago. And let me explain.
The TG-5240 Is replacing my TG-2257. I'm not crazy about the new hot orange color on the handsets LCD and keys. I would like blue better. Voice quality is clear and good. No problems so far. But the new missing feature is: on all my phones until now, whenever I playback a message and the handset is on the base, the caller ID shows while the message is playing. NO MORE! The handset just doesn't care I'm listening to my messages, it just shows me a freaking 'CHARGING...' message. So I have to figure out who is the voice talking on the message. I really miss that feature. (actually, according to the user manual, it supposed to work with the caller ID showing, but for some reason it's not working on my phone. I will contact Panasonic for that).
The talking caller ID is really weird. It reads the names very funny, and "out of the area" calls it always saying 'unavailable' and bla bla bla... I just hate it. Fortunately, you can turn it OFF (as I did). You can have this feature on or off independent on the base or the handset.
The recording in the answering machine has 2 modes. Standard, and Enhanced recording (for better sound quality), which reduces recording time in half (from 16 minutes to 8 minutes).
Another good feature (copied from cell phones) that if somebody is calling you and you don't want to pickup the phone, and you want to turn off the ringer now (for this call only), you could press the 'Off' button (which is as the 'end' key in a cell phone), and the ringer will turn off. The call will be transferred to the answering machine, of course.
There are many things more similar to cell phones in this phones. A few examples: A selection of many ringer tones with some musical ringers; When you come home you don't see any more on the handset LCD '5 new calls' or (like my previous TG-2257) 'new calls received', but you see '5 missed calls'.
A new feature on this phone, that on the top of the antenna of the handset there is an indicator lamp (which is flashing while the phone is ringing), and you have an option to set that if you have a new message, the lamp will flash, even the handset is off the base. So you don't have to go to your base to check for new messages. You just see the indicator lamp flashing slowly on the handset, and you press the soft button 'play', and you hear the messages on the handset speaker. Smart!
I also like that lately in Panasonic phones you have a redial list of the last 5 outgoing calls (Although some others have a list of the last 10 calls).
Let's go over some things Panasonic used to offer on their previous phones and now you can't get it any more, and I really missed them all.
1) LCD on the base to show Caller ID and other info. (even on the older models that do have it, it was never backlit).
2) In the good old days, the answering system had a 'fast talk' feature on message playback, so if somebody is talking too slowly, you can make it play faster by about 30%. And you was also able to rewind it fast (also about 30% faster than 1X the speed). (much like your CD players rewind and fast forward functions, when you press the forward button and hold it, it plays faster and while pressing and holding the rewind button it's rewinding but you can hear it. This was very useful for me in many situations, for example: you have a long message from your friend, with a return phone number at the end of the message, and I just wanted to re-listen to the phone number, I was able to rewind as many times as I wanted to listen to that phone number. Or restart the message from the beginning and fast forward it to the point you want to listen (you know, we're always in a hurry...)
In the newer Panasonic phones (last 4-5 years or so), if you press rewind - even if you keep holding it, it will return to the beginning of the message or to the previous message, same as forward will move it to the next message. Also, the last few years they have a new useless feature called 'Slow talk', so you can play the message about 30% slower than usual! I never used that feature. But for you people who did used it, be advised that this feature has been eliminated from this phone. No more slow or fast talk - just regular speed.
Now, let me describe some features Panasonic never had, but other competitors do have them, and would be nice to see them in upcoming Panasonic telephones (I hope Panasonic is reading the reviews).
1) Show the time (and date) on the handset when not in use.
2) Automatically adjust time when a caller calls in (with caller ID). In Panasonic phones you have to set it first manually, and caller ID will adjust the time if the time is incorrect. But if the date & time have not been previously set, caller ID information will not adjust the date & time.
Sorry for my long review. I hope you'll find some useful information.

I like the idea, but my two year old broke the thing 2 seconds out of the box.The tiny (and I mean tiny) little plastic hinges holding the door on don't stand a chance. On top of that, the plastic hinge that's supposed to hold the door closed doesn't have any strength, and my bundle of cords kept popping it open.I bought two of them so had an extra.Needless to say I'm keeping the thing now that I have it.It's a good idea, and mostly works, but could definitely use some stronger binding pieces.

Linksys SPA3000 Analog Telephone Adapter 1 Port FXO + 1 Port FXS Review

Linksys SPA3000 Analog Telephone Adapter 1 Port FXO + 1 Port FXS
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a powerful product, but with lots of settings, no manual, and some complexity to configure.Once configured, it works beautifully.I've configured it so that our local calls go out through our regular local phone company on the regular local phone line, but our long distance calls seamlessly go out via SIP on our VOIP provider. My non-technical wife just picks up the phone and dials any number, and it automatically figures out how to place the call for a good rate.Incoming calls just come in seamlessly.Caller ID works fine.It took about five evenings to get it set up properly, and I have a degree in computer science and lots of computer networking experience.

There's no manual provided with the product, and Sipura has not made the manuals easily visible on their website. If you're thinking about this product, do a web search for help in figuring out how to configure it.This is NOT something you'll just figure out without documentation.

Some embedded documentation would help this product tremendously. It's mostly configured via a web browser; while configuring, I should be able to click a "help" button for an explanation of what the various fields do.Even a well-written paper manual would help (the .pdf file I found wasn't so great). If this product were documented properly, it'd almost certainly rate 5 stars.

TRENDnet 56K USB Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560U (Blue) Review

TRENDnet 56K USB Data/Fax/TAM Modem TFM-560U
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bits & Bytes, S I Business Trends, August, 2008. Bill Dubovsky.

Situation: It seems that almost everyone has ubiquitous connections with the world via their Smartphone, iPhone, FiOS, cable, WiFi, WiMax or other broadband alternative. Why should we be thinking about 1980's modem technology in 2008?

The fact is that fewer laptops come with built-in modems and some of us mobile and rural users still need modems connected to our laptops for business reasons. Sensitive governmental, utility, security, financial and medical organizations, require staff to log into their systems and networks via special toll-free numbers for good reason - they don't trust Internet security and need to minimize the risk of being hacked.

Some users need a high speed modem for Internet access in rural parts of the country that don't have broadband access. A number of ISPs offer "high speed dial-up" or "DSL speeds over regular phone lines," for these customers. Other users need to send and receive faxes occasionally when they're out of the office and don't want to pay a monthly fee for an Internet fax forwarding service, and still others want the ability to broadcast voicemails and faxes to colleagues and to have their own answering machine/voicemail when they are on the road. Others just want to upload and download data from their "home system" to their remote pc on occasion. If you're a mobile or rural business person - you may still need a modem attached to your pc, and you may need a more versatile (fax, voice, data) modem than normally comes with most laptops today.

What is it?

A modem (MOdulator-DEModulator) is hardware which allows digital devices such as computers, fax machines, etc., to communicate with each other over analog phone lines or special modems that connect with other long distance media such as DSL, cable, FiOS, satellite or radio. The modem I will be reviewing is the TFM-56OU by TrendnetTRENDnet 56K USB Data/Fax/TAM Modem (V.92, Kflex56), about $30.00 on Amazon.com, and is used to connect your pc to analog POTS lines (Plain Old Telephone Service). This USB connected modem can be used with a pc or a desktop machine and is a data, fax, and voice modem which is video phone ready. Check with amazon.com for complete technical specs.

How it works:

After installing the drivers that come on the CD-ROM, simply plug this device which is about the size of the original iPod nano into any USB port on your pc. The next step is to install your fax/voice/data software or use what comes with the device. I am a long-time user of Cheyenne Bitware (now CA Bitware) and the software quickly identified the modem and installed the appropriate drivers. You can get updated Bitware software from many sources on the Internet. The main difference I noticed is that the new modem is much faster and more reliable than the one built-into my aging Sony Vaio, plus it has voice capabilities!

What you need:

A pc with a CD-ROM drive, 300 MHz CPU or above, 256 MB memory, 4 MB hard drive space and a USB port 1.1 or 2.0 and Microsoft Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/2003/Vista.The Trendnet TFM-56OU comes with all software, hardware and cables you need to connect to your computer.

How hard is it to use?

I installed it to my MacBook Pro, using the Windows XP partition and got it working within 5 minutes. Note that this modem does not work with Mac OSX or Linux, only with Windows as mentioned previously.

Findings:

The modem worked as advertized. I always like to check the users' comments and reviews in Amazon before I buy anything, as they seem to be an honest assessment of what you can expect.

Pros: The device was a good value for about $30.00. It is small, light, comes with a cap to protect the USB connector and is easy to install if you follow the simple directions. It turns out to be much faster than my older pc installed modem, has the added voice capability which I didn't have, can be used for "high speed dialup," and seems to have fewer errors when sending faxes to lists of recipients. I also liked the fact that the modem is self-powered via the USB port - there is no need for another external power cord to plug in.

Cons:The modem is one-piece and has to be plugged into the USB port directly. It probably would have been better to connect it via a USB cable which would give you more flexibility in how to position and install, especially if you're using it in a desktop system. I was also disappointed that it couldn't be used with the Mac side of my MacBook Pro. The Apple modem is very simple and doesn't have the functionality I need. I would hope that Trendnet would develop and make Mac OSX drivers available for Mac users.

Bottom-line:

Well worth the money. I just needed a simple modem for the pc side of my MacBook Pro as a back-up fax device and was pleasantly surprised that Bitware recognized the device and gave me the voice capabilities that I have done without for so long. For more information and other user's reviews, check on the Trendnet modem by visiting www.Amazon.com. This device is not commonly available in electronic retail stores.

Eco Surge Protector Green 12 Outlet Tel/Coax 10ft Cord 3600 Joules Review

Eco Surge Protector Green 12 Outlet Tel/Coax 10ft Cord 3600 Joules
Average Reviews:

I got this to protect my new 55-inch Samsung 3D LED, Blue Ray player, sound system, and satellite box.I agonized over the choices in surge protectors out there.I researched online and always found somebody hating on almost every model I checked out.Made me kind of nervous.I ended up selecting this unit for the following: at 3600 joules, it is rated higher that most at this price point, its got a UL rating of 330 volts (from what I understand this is the best rating possible), and a $250,000 Ultimate Lifetime Insurance coverage for connected equipment. The company Tripp Lite sells a lot of surge protection equipment to hospitals, which also sounds good to me.And I liked the feature set and price as well.

There are twelve outlets.Four 'always on' (one of which is designated as 'master') and eight 'slave'.The 'always on' outlets are widely spaced to handle the large transformer plugs. All outlets have covers that easily slide over unused outlets.I've got the TV set up as the 'master' with the Blue Ray and sound hooked up to the 'slave' outlets. When I turn the TV on, the Blue Ray and sound come on automatically. No searching for three remotes just to watch TV.When I turn off the TV, the 'slave' units turn off. This prevents the vampire power usage from these units (TV still consumes standby power). The unit has a switch on the bottom to turn this feature off.All outlets would then function as 'always on'.All outlets also are protected in either mode. The satellite box is hooked up to the 'always on' outlets so that it doesn't need to go through its start up every time I turn on the TV.I have not hooked up the coax or ethernet connections, so, I can not comment on them at this time.

Overall, a great value, features work as advertised.Buy it.

Netgear Dual Mode Cordless Phone with Skype(SPH200D) Review

Netgear Dual Mode Cordless Phone with Skype(SPH200D)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this phone for little over two months and really like it. Before, I couldn't warm up to using Skype because I didn't want to be tied to my computer. Now with this phone I'm using it now for all of my outgoing (SkypeOut) calls. My long distance bill has fallen to zero and I've reduced the number of cell minutes as well.

There is practically no setup. I just plugged the base unit into my router, and it connected automatically to my network. I did have to punch in my Skype name and password on the numeric keypad, but it turns out that I could have done that easily through a web browser - the base unit has a configuration page similar to other Netgear routers. Once my name and password were in, I could start calling.

The phone displays all of the contacts that you have previously set up with Skype. In fact, I recommend using Skype on your computer to do all of the setup - it's just easier that way. The phone even shows the amount of Skype credits that I have.

The voice quality is great, but there is a slight delay - similar to what you get when your overseas call is routed through a satellite. I like the fact that the phone comes with a standard 1/8-inch headset jack - I use a headset for most of my calls.

As far as wireless range, I've been able to range throughout my house with no discernable dropouts. It's seems to get better range than my 2.4GHz cordless phone and my WIFI.

So the bottom line is: I'm happy with this phone, happy that it's Skype, and I plan to keep using it.
