If One of Your Home Theater Components Isn't Surge Protected, Your Whole System Isn't Protected

For many of us, home entertainment isn't confined to the den or family room anymore. It's anywhere there's an available wall outlet. You might have a TV and VCR in a bedroom, and maybe even a secondary satellite receiver, too. Those components need to be protected from power surges, just like in your main system. Otherwise, when a surge hits, it can damage the sensitive circuitry inside these components. And, if they're connected to your main system, a surge can easily travel to it and cause significant damage.

Compact Home Theater PowerCenter HTS 200 Delivers EnhancedSurge Protection

Plug your A/V components into HTS 200, including your VCR, satellite receiver and TiVoDVR, and consider them well protected by Monster's SurgeGuard circuitry. SurgeGuard delivers high capacity protection (1680 joules) against performance-damaging power surges and spikes. The HTS 200 also prevents power disturbances from traveling down coax and phone connections to other home theater components in your system. In the event of a damaging power surge, Monster's Dual Mode Plus protection circuitry automatically disconnects your HTS 200 from the AC power and sounds an alarm to let you know that it protected your equipment. The HTS 200 also features our Stage 1 Clean Power filters, which prevents AC power pollution from degrading performance so you can enjoy better sound and picture.

Get the Performance and Power Protection Your Equipment Deserves

From protection to performance, the compact, affordable HTS 200 delivers it all. Purchase one today and discover the Monsterous benefits of Monster Power!

Sony RK-G138 Audio Connecting Cable for Headphone Extension (3 meters) Review

Sony RK-G138 Audio Connecting Cable for Headphone Extension
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had previously owned a different brand of headphone/speaker extension cable for my computer speaker system and it worked well for about 6 months. After that, the female connector started getting loose, and I would only hear sound coming out of the left channel unless I wiggled the connector around to 'fix' the problem.I would have to repeat this process almost every day, and it started to annoy me to no end.

Alas, I came across this Sony brand extension cable, and I thought I'd give it shot.

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard a 'click' noise when I connected my speakers to the extension cord, a very snug fit.It gave me the sense of ease I was looking for - I knew that I didn't have to worry about a bad connection again.

So far, I've noticed better sound quality coming out of my speakers than before (most likely due to the fact my older extension cable was junk), and I have yet to worry about a bad connection/poor sound quality. It feels good to have my speaker system sounding right again.

BOTTOM LINE - great solution for extending the distance for your headphones or computer speaker system! Gold plated connectors, 2.5mm to 6.3mm adapter, Sony-quality, 9.8', good stuff :)

Panasonic KX-TMC98B 2-Line Corded Phone with Answering System and Jog Dial Review

Panasonic KX-TMC98B 2-Line Corded Phone with Answering System and Jog Dial
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A very nice piece of telephone gear, integrating the phone, answering machine, and caller ID functions. I only have two complaints: 1. For some reason, there is no MUTE button! A mute button is the greatest, particularly for tele-conference calls. 2. There are no one-button speed-dial buttons. It can remember 100 names and numbers, which is great, but to access the list you must: a. turn the jog dial, b. press a letter key, perhaps a couple of times, to get to the desired first letter, c. turn the jog dial some more to get to your desired entry. That's a lot of activity to call someone you call all the time!

Product Description:
The Panasonic KX-TMC98-B two-line jog-dial digital answering machine uses microchip flash memory to provide 33 minutes of recording time for both lines. Two-line operation with three-way conference calling allows for combined conference calls with lines 1 and 2. The digital duplex speakerphone helps reduce echo and dropout for more natural sounding conversations.
Jog dial operation provides quick access to the phone directory, a caller ID list, and recorded messages and helps with phone programming. Caller ID/call waiting (also known as caller ID with visual call waiting, requires call waiting and caller ID services from your phone company) displays the name and phone number of an incoming call even while you're on another call. Caller ID with pager call can contact a pager and forward caller ID information when the answering machine receives a call.
The headset jack supports an optional headset; a data port provides easy hookup of a computer, modem, fax, or answering machine. Other features include a multifunction 4-line LCD, auto interrupt, call screening, four-step handset volume control, hold/flash/redial, new-message playback, separate ringers with three-step volume control, switchable tone/pulse control, toll saver, and wall mountability.
This phone comes with a one-year warranty.

Panasonic KX-TG2740S 2.4 GHz DSS 2-Line Expandable Cordless Speakerphone with Answering System and Caller ID Review

...Yes, I love this phone. No, I don't have any connection to Panasonic. It's just that I've been waiting a long time for something like this at a price I could afford.
The KX-TG2740S is the top of Panasonic's new line of expandable cordless phone systems (expandable means you can buy and add more handsets - in this case up to 7 in addition to the one which comes included).
It has two lines, built-in digital answering machine with multiple mailboxes, keypad + speakerphone on the base station, caller-id, plus a great feature I couldn't find on any similar system, nor on Panasonic's more expensive KX-TG2000 and KX-TG4000 systems: a speakerphone in the handsets! This is invaluable when you call a voice-mail system or information service (like Moviefone) which requires you to push keys in response to voice prompts - or when you get put on hold by some customer service rep for 20 minutes.
One of the additional handset models you can buy (the KX-TGA272S) has a built-in alarm clock and lies horizontally in its charger with a handy speakerphone button showing -- perfect for bedside or computer-side use.
Range and voice quality are excellent; this is my first 2.5ghz phone and I was concerned that it might interfere with my wireless Airport network (or vice-versa), but that has not turned out to be the case, even with four handsets scattered around the house.
Panasonic has always made good cordless phones - but with the KX-TG2740s it has really hit the bullseye IMO.
(For those who don't need two lines and/or a built-in answering machine, the other models in this line [KX-TG2700s, KX-TG2720s, & KX-TG2730s] are also good bets).

Keyspan VP-24A Cordless Voip Phone Skype Compatible for Mac Or Pc Review

Keyspan VP-24A Cordless Voip Phone Skype Compatible for Mac Or Pc
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With the explosion of voice over IP applications, new devices appear everyday to supposedly ease our digital life, but the abundance of "standards" and protocols makes it difficult for the end user to figure out exactly what each product can accomplish.

My biggest gripe with this specific product is that despite its name, it's NOT a VoIP phone. A real VoIP phone contains everything that's needed to hook up to a TCP/IP network (wired and/or wireless) and implements a telephony protocol such as the open standard SIP or the proprietary Skype. For instance, the Zyxel W2000 can connect to a SIP server though an ordinary WiFi access point without the help of a computer, because it has an 802.11b wireless interface and implements the SIP protocol.

Instead, this Keyspan phone is just a wireless USB handset, which requires the use of a computer to function. Many similar products have been available for over a year, but they only work on Windows. This one supports both Windows and OSX.

The small box contains the phone, a USB dongle smaller than an iPod Shuffle, an installation CD, a USB to mini-USB cord and three AAA rechargeable Ni-MH batteries. To recharge the phone, you plug it into a powered USB port. Keyspan does not provide a separate charger, but this is a minor issue since this mini-USB connector is becoming increasingly common.

The Macintosh installation adds a small application named WirelessUSBPhone, and a USB driver. The application bridges the Keyspan phone with the Skype application through the use of the Skype API.

To start using the phone, you need to pair it by pressing a tiny button on the USB transmitter while the phone is in close proximity. Once this is done, you can scroll through the contact list on your phone and call them, or you can also dial numbers directly. When calls come into Skype, the screen lights up and displays the caller name.

The sound quality is excellent. The range is also particularly good, considering the tiny size of the components and the lack of external antennas. In my informal tests it is equivalent to that of a recent good quality cordless phone. Finally, the battery life is also very good: I would estimate it to be at least 4 days of stand-by and several hours of talk time, and since it uses standard AAA batteries it's easy to keep a backup set around just in case.

If you're looking for the Skype equivalent of a SIP phone, i.e. a standalone phone that works without relying on a computer, don't buy this product. Otherwise, if you use Skype a lot and wish you could use it without being tethered to your computer, this phone is the perfect answer. Unlike competing products it comes with very high quality software and offers a Macintosh version (Keyspan is well known for the quality of its products and software). Installation could not be easier and the software functions flawlessly and transparently. After a few days with the phone I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Siemens Gigaset Digital Cordless Phone with Hybrid IP/Landline Calling (A580IP) Review

Siemens Gigaset Digital Cordless Phone with Hybrid IP/Landline Calling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am reasonably technical and run a VOIP PBX for our small business with several different providers, IP Phones and gateways. This seemed like a nice addition where cordless IP phones are needed.I have almost returned this several times because of the UI and contact import issues, however I am keeping it in hope of an updated firmware release.

Pros -
Good voice quality
Register multiple VOIP Providers
Price is right for an expandable VOIP based ATA and handset

Cons -
Handset Interface and Features are a mess to use - Siemens could learn something from other cordless handset manufactures
Vcard contact import is a nightmare
Can't seem to remove internal Gigaset setting/provider
Web interface is acceptable If you do the upgrade... if not it is so slow you can' use it.
No Headset Jack (are you kidding me?)

I want to like it... but not quite prime time.

Pros: Great for elderly - loud ring, large loud buttons, light flashes when rings, amplifies incoming sound, hangs on wall in kitchen (minimal space), easy to use, person on other end can hear you perfectly

Cons: There's a bit of an echo or something (probably with all that amplification) that you hear a bit of yourself. My parents say it's ok, but I want them to have a great phone. They love the other features.... so it's kind of a toss up...

Soundpoint Ip 550 Sip 4LINE Ip Desktop Phone with HD Voice Review

Soundpoint Ip 550 Sip 4LINE Ip Desktop Phone with HD Voice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought several of these phones for employees at my office last year. They've worked very well as office phones and even as conference phones with up to three people sitting around the phone. The sound quality is very clear.

There are a few caveats that apply to all VoIP phones. First, before you can use a VoIP phone you must configure the VoIP server, in our case Asterisk, to associate the phone's MAC address with its phone extension. You can't expect to take the phone out of the package, plug it in, and start talking as you would with a regular phone.

Second, VoIP phones transmit voice over the packet-switched Internet instead of the circuit-switched network used by the "plain old telephone system" (POTS). Because packet-switched networks do not use a dedicated electrical circuit, there can be a variability in the amount of time it takes to transmit voice to or from a VoIP phone. This variability can cause temporary dropouts in voice. This quality-of-service issue is mitigated by the fact that this phone has a configurable and adaptable jitter buffer that can compensate for this variability by buffering up packets during times of delays and "shrinking" the buffer during times of silence.

Another consideration when buying Polycom phones is that firmware and configuration file updates are available only for customers of authorized Polycom resellers. You'll want to make sure you buy at least some Polycom phones from one of these resellers to keep your phones' software up to date. The firmware and configurations can be loaded from a TFTP server, so all you need to do is load the latest firmware and configuration files on the server, reboot the phones, and they all update automatically.

AT&T E2562 2.4 GHz DSS 2-Line Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System and Corded Base Review

AT&T E2562 2.4 GHz DSS 2-Line Expandable Cordless Phone with Answering System and Corded Base
Average Reviews:

I spent 5 years wrestling the Siemens gigaset. This thing was so flaky and unreliable, that we eventually had to get another system. All the other expandable 2 line systems had some sort of major handicap, so we waited and waited.

Now, AT&T all of a sudden seems to get it right. I'm not saying that this thing is without its faults, it certainly is.But as far as the alternatives in this space, it seems to be the best one out there. As someone who avoided anything that even looked like it had some association to AT&T for the past 2 decades, I am surprised at how nice this thing is.

Sound quality is quite good, as is range. The handsets, a huge siemens weakness, are really nice. Easy software features, simple use, a decent speakerphone, easy dialing, and a usable intercom, plus they are simply nice looking and tactile feel is high end.

THe base is good also. The line selection thing is a tad awkward, but you just have to get used to it, then it will be fine. The speakerphone volume is poor, but it is not the end of the world. The commercial polycom and nortel speakerphones sound lousy also. The answering system is a huge improvement over the siemens, and the universal paging and intercom of the base to the handsets is really great.

All in all, very pleased.1 more thing, the handsets use AA batteries in a goofy battery carrier.I note this because there are consistent complaints of battery life issues on cordless phones. It appears that you can substitute a high MAh NiMH battery, in other words no $30 proprietary battery, which can save hundreds over a few years.

So far, so good.Hope it doesn't die in 11 months like all other consumer electronics seem to....

AT&T TL92278 DECT 6.0 Bluetooth Cordless Phone With Caller ID And ITAD - 2 Handsets Review

AT&T TL92278 DECT 6.0 Bluetooth Cordless Phone With Caller ID And ITAD - 2 Handsets
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product as part of a plan to drop my land line phone service. I've had it about 4 days.

Setup was easy. Connecting to the cell phone was a matter of pressing the blue tooth button on the AT&T phone, and then telling my cell phone to look for the AT&T phone. This is different than just making the cell phone "visible".

The cell phone has remained connected to the AT&T phone. It disconnects when I leave the house, and automatically reconnects when I return.

My cell phone sits about 2 feet from the AT&T. On several calls the sound quality has been excellent. I have not had any complaints from people I have called (so far).

Making a cell phone call is just like making a land line call. You just enter the number, or select a number from the internal phone book, and press the "celluar" button. You hear a couple of beeps, the handset connects with the cell phone, and the call is dialed.

I can now answer and make calls on my cell phone on any of 4 extension phones in my house without having to carry or located my cell phone all the time. The AT&T comes with a base station and one extension. I've purchased 2 additional extensions.

The next steps are to add a dedicated cell phone line to my celluar account ($10 a month), transfer my home phone number to the cell phone, connect that cell phone with the AT&T, and then drop my land line service and save $64 a month.

==============================
Update 7 weeks later.

I've dropped the land line and have a dedicated cell phone, with the old phone number on it, connected to the AT&T. The transfer of the old number to the cell phone took longer than I expected, but was smooth and transparent. The system works perfectly. Sound quality is excellent.Speaker phone is excellent. No complaints from anyone on the other end. I have my cell phone, my wife has her cell phone, and we still have a convenient, easy to use, house phone.

We've been very happy with our VTech 2431 single-line 2.4MHz
phone system for the past few years, so now that we have
three lines this looked like just the right thing.
Unfortunately this system appears to have been designed by a
completely different team. The handsets are very large (too
large to fit into a pocket), the menus are more difficult to
use, the speed-dial feature is extremely clumsy, and the
signal quality is very poor, with lots of hissing in the
background. We've sent this one back and replaced it with a
two-line VTech 20-2431 system, which is much more like the
original 2431 and doesn't suffer from the problems of the
40-2421 series.

Each handset/charger stand can be placed anywhere you have a power outlet, eliminating the need for additional phone jacks and complicated wiring procedures. The intercom feature lets you communicate with other handsets, while the call transfer function provides a convenient way to route incoming calls from one handset to another. The conference feature allows you to communicate with multiple outside parties, or conference-in an additional handset.
The 40-2421 utilizes 2.4 GHz digital spread spectrum technology, which provides clearer reception over larger distances than traditional cordless phones operating on lower bands and transmitting an analog signal. Panasonic Dect 6.0 Black Cordless Phone with Answering Machine and ChoiceMail (KX-TG7434B) Review

Panasonic Dect 6.0 Black Cordless Phone with Answering Machine and ChoiceMail
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think Panasonic finally got it right with this one, and I only have one (very small) issue with the phone. All in all, this is without a doubt the best cordless phone system I have ever used.

I had a previous Panasonic 5.8 gHz phone and loved it.One day after about 2 years of use, the base abruptly died, and none of the handsets would connect.I think it's a sign of a strong manufacturer, though, that when one product dies the only brand that I would even consider again is the same one.

With the previous model, I had only a couple of small complaints: 1) when you received a call on one handset, it would still show "missed call" on all of the other handsets, and 2) you had to clear the missed call list individually on all handsets. Both issues have been corrected with this phone. All handsets now synchronize automatically when you review the call list, and only calls that you truly don't answer show as missed calls. And there's no more having to copy the phone book from one receiver to another, either. Changes on one phone are mirrored on all of the others.

The large display on this phone really sets it apart from others as well. When you program the time on the phone, the display acts as a second clock. And it's readable from aross the room!

Speaking of readable, the large display also makes it very easy to see who's calling. The phone does offer the talking caller ID feature found on other Panasonic phones, but we find it to be annoying.Thankfully, you can turn the feature off in the menu system.

And that leads me to my only complaint about this phone, albeit an extremely minor one. When you get into various menus, I haven't found a way to go back one screen. For example, if I click into the caller list and then click on the individual entry, I can't figure out how to go back to the caller list.I have to go all the way out to the main phone screen and then go back into the caller list.If there was just a simple "back" button, this phone would be perfect in every way.

Of course the purpose of a phone is to allow you to communicate clearly, and this one excels in that department.Connections are clear, and it is very easy to hear the other end.The previous phone had a "voice enhancer" technology that I found to be unnatural and annoying, and that (thankfully) is not present here. But it's not missed.

I've had the phone down the street about 7 or 8 houses away, and the connection is still rock solid. We live in a typical suburban setting, and I've heard no interference or static at any time.

Also, the DECT 6 technology, operating on a lower frequency, does not interfere with our wireless computer network at all. And I've never heard any static from the microwave or any other electronic device, for that matter.

The real selling feature of this phone to me was the visual voicemail list.Since the base doesn't have any kind of indicator as to how many messages are stored, the handset serves as an excellent way to navigate the messages. And you can listen to messages in any order, and you can save or delete them one by one as well. The fact that the messages are tagged with the caller ID info is great, too!

Oh, one other feature that I haven't seen mentioned is that the keypad is lit. That makes for calling in a dark room to be painless.

All in all, this one is very deserving of the 5-star rating.

Likes: the large, well lit display; the message list (choicemail); automatic syncing of all handsets.

Dislikes: The lack of a "back" button in the menu screens.

[EDIT: Someone pointed out that you can indeed go back one screen in the menus. You just have to push the little joystick controller any direction, and the phone will return to the previous screen. Now the phone is perfect! Thanks for the tip!!]

[UPDATE: 5/2/10]

After using the phones for one year, I still stand behind the original review. These things are still working like champs. We had one of the 4 handsets lose a screen after a fall from the kitchen counter (must have landed *just* right that day, as they have taken a few tumbles in the year). That screen is now covered with leaked black LCD gunk, and we have that handset placed in the least used spot in the house.

The only other issue is that a bit of the black paint on the face of the units around the buttons has become worn around the edges, and the silver color of the underlying rubber / plastic is showing through.None of the necessary parts of the buttons themselves have worn off, and it's just a cosmetic thing.Frankly, with the use the phones get, this is a minor issue at most.

Battery life is still good from the original rechargables, but we hang up most of the phones after each use back into the recharging cradles. The one handset that gets most of the use shows some signs of dimished battery life, but it's used at least 3 hours a day, and it doesn't always get put back on the charger. It now loses its charge after about 3 days like this.

Otherwise, I'm as happy now as I was when I wrote the original review.Revised rating: 5 stars.

I recently bought this cordless phone for my parents as they were having trouble rushing to reach one of their corded extensions. So far it is great. Because it comes with two handheld units, they each get to carry one with them all day. The best part is that the phones come with built-in intercoms and they can communicate with each other via the intercom when they are in different rooms (which is frequently!). My father, who is also hard of hearing and has difficulty hearing conversations on most phones, has no problem hearing people on this phone. So all in all, a great phone. So great, in fact, that I'm thinking of purchasing one for myself and my wife!

Linksys by Cisco Cable Modem with Ethernet USB Connection Review

Linksys by Cisco Cable Modem with Ethernet USB Connection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My Motorola Surfboard would come and go. It was not dependable. So I trotted down to OfficeMax and bought this Linksys modem. It was a snap it install. No software needed unless you use it with USB, which I don't.

I called Cox and gave them the numbers off the box and was online fast. No more being knocked off when I least expect it. In fact, I haven't been knocked off at all.

This is a great modem. I use it with a Linksys N router and Cox Communications.

Not much you can say about a modem. It either keeps you online or not. This one does.

Highly recommended.
