Panasonic KX-TG6500B 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable 2-Line Cordless Phone (Black) Review

Panasonic KX-TG6500B 5.8 GHz DSS Expandable 2-Line Cordless Phone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are, at this time, exactly two 5.8 GHz 2-line expandable phone systems -- this Panasonic and the Uniden TRU8866 -- and I found it frustrating to research them because they're new and there's not much information out there. So my two cents, should it be helpful...I bought this Panasonic 6500B and three handsets, played with them for a week, and called today for an RMA number to return them. I'm now evaluating the Uniden system, which I think I'll end up keeping.

(For reference, I'm migrating from a Siemens gigaset 2420, 2-line 2.4GHz system, amazon item B00004R7R1. It's noted for a few quirks, but it's been solid for 6 years and I'd easily favor it over the Panasonic.)

Pros:
-- you only have two options at present, so this phone does deliver 2-line 5.8 GHz functionality
-- blinking antenna for ringing/message was a nice touch
-- all of the basic stuff you'd expect...intercom, speakerphone, Caller ID, etc.Cons:
-- poor sound quality, even compared to my 2.4GHz system -- there was a constant hiss even when standing near the base, and it wasn't line noise. (There is a voice boost/voice enhancer function, though even the manual notes that it might amplify any existing line noise you may already have.)

-- one 'feature' that tilted me toward the panasonic was a 'shared' phone directory among the handsets and base. It actually works like the Siemens - you have to manually copy phonebook entries from one handset to another, so keeping them all in sync is a pain.

-- The handsets didn't behave like extensions of the same line; when you answer a call on one handset, all of the others display 'missed call', which you must then clear from EACH handset. So I always seemed to pick up a handset with a few missed calls, which were actually answered on a different handset.

-- Lack of an aux port so the phone can catch the distinctive ring and shuttle a call to the fax (btw, the Uniden doesn't have this either)

-- Misc. minor annoyances: Panasonic still uses a two-digit code for the answering machine, as it did ~15 years ago. Only eight ring tones (4 ring/4 melody), none of which were great.

-- basic interface is just crude compared to other modern phones/cell phones (I'm a techie with a UI/usability background, so I do have bias there).

Overall, I found this Panasonic to be a step down from the Siemens. I've only had the Uniden for a couple days, and I'd certainly say it's the better option of the two.

Panasonic KX-TG2216FV 2.4 GHz GigaRange Digital Cordless Phone
Average Reviews:

This phone is the highest rated cordless of the 143 that Amazon offers, and for good reason: equipment quality, sound clarity, and low price, offering the advantages of speakphone *and* cordless for less than half the price of similar products!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Panasonic KX-TG2216FV 2.4 GHz GigaRange Digital Cordless Phone (Blue)

Product Description:
The KX-TG2216FV's stylish, splash- and shock-resistant cordless handset gives you the freedom to use the phone while engaged in most household activities. The phone's 2.4 GHz digital technology avoids the hiss and fuzziness that analog signals are subject to. Maintenance is minimal: the supplied rechargeable NiMH battery provides up to five hours of talk time and lasts for 11 days on standby.
With call waiting/caller ID and 30-station memory, the LCD shows the name and number of incoming callers even when you're on another call. (Call waiting requires a subscription to a fee-based phone-company service.) The phone even includes an FSK- and stutter-compatible message-waiting indicator. If you subscribe to a voicemail service, a light on the phone will illuminate when you have new messages.
Panasonic's Voice Enhancer technology "helps clarify and improve sound reception creating a natural-sounding voice that is easy to hear and understand. The Panasonic Voice Enhancer Technology is able to simulate a band signal above and below the normal bandwidth limitations, achieving a sound which is close to the actual voice."
The three-line, multifunction LCD lets you see all caller ID information without scrolling. Also, back lighting on the handset LCD aids visibility in low light situations. A digital handset speakerphone helps reduce the echo and dropout commonly found in speakerphones. Up to 30 names and telephone numbers can be stored alphabetically and quickly accessed for dialing via the handset's navigator key.
Six selectable ring tones let you choose from a variety of alerts for incoming calls, and a low-battery indicator on the LCD lets you know when its time to recharge the battery.

I installed this for its intended purpose in our new structured wiring closet.Phone line goes into one jack, and the other 12 connect to the wiring in the house.

Only issue is mounting it.One can purchase a bracket from OnQ/Legrand that this clips into, but that doubles the cost. And it uses these proprietary plastic "rivets" that appear to connect it easily but mean that it's hard toconnect to anything else. The included mounted bracket holds only one end, not both, so it hangs a little loose.

This system seemed the answer for our needs - potability, long range, caller ID, and answering capability. It worked like a dream for about one week until we started to notice clips in transmission while speaking andeven disconnection if the second line was activated. The idea is excellentand the handsets are easy to use and program. If only Siemens could upgradethe most important part of this system - the transmission. We're in themarket for another system now. P.S. Siemens customer service was excellent, they overnighted a new base system to us for exchange. Unfortunately, theproblems persisted.

Product Description:
The Siemens Gigaset 2410 2.4 GHz cordless phone is an expandable cordless system for active households or home offices. It provides 2.4 GHz technology for clear sound without static or interference from other cordless phones operating at crowded lower frequencies. It also offers digital spread spectrum technology for security against eavesdropping and provides access to a wide range of convenience features.
Because the Siemens Gigaset 2410 2.4 GHz cordless phone is expandable, only the base needs to be connected to a jack. You can plug a total of four handset chargers into standard power outlets, and you can operate all four handsets simultaneously without doing additional wiring. For example, while you and another user talk to a third party on an outside line, two other users can talk to each other through the intercom feature on their handsets. You can customize each handset with its own ring tones, personalized directory, and extension name and number.
The Siemens Gigaset 2410 includes a three-line backlit graphical display that provides caller ID/call waiting information and easy access to a call log and all other system features. The handset design includes headset jacks for hands-free use and internal antennas to protect them against damage. This phone comes with a one-year warranty.

Cisco PAP2T Internet Phone Adapter with 2 Ports for Voice-over-IP Review

Cisco PAP2T Internet Phone Adapter with 2 Ports for Voice-over-IP
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You need to know what you're doing to really get the most out of this device, but really, this device works fine. I own several of them and use them for my business and home.

To get it to work, you need to sign up for a SIP account with a VOIP provider, like Voip.ms, Voicepulse, Vitelity, or Callcentric.

I suggest updating the firmware as soon as you receive it, as there are frequent useful firmware updates. To respond to some of the one star reviews:

Of course the device doesn't work with Vonage, it's not supposed to! Vonage doesn't use SIP!

Of course the device died when you plugged the wrong power adapter into it - it fried the circuit board. You could make that same comment about hundreds of devices.

UPDATE: While I still think this device is good, I now recommend purchasing a Linksys SPA-2102 instead, due to a new firmware update from Linksys. It's worth the extra $[...] or $[...] bucks for the ability to tweak DTMF detection.

I bought two of these phones and it is so difficult to hear the person that I'm talking to - I'm glad they were inexpensive because I'm going to have to buy new phones!

If you put a finger over the microphone it eliminates the noise, but then, of course, you can't talk until you move your finger. A headset helps somewhat.

Average Reviews:

I really like this phone. Reception is great in my house, but range is a bit disappointing. At least it works fine in my yard. Most important features are the sound quality and multiple handset capability. It feelsbetter in my pocket than a PCS phone - I keep it there so I never lose it.The built-in antenna is a great feature. Disappointments are in the calldisplay and voice mail features. I wish it had a "messagewaiting" indicator and a "xx Missed Calls" indicator. I alsowish it could look up numbers from its directory for incoming calls withnumber display but no name display. I bought a cheap desk call display unitto replace some of these features, but it should be in the phone. Finally,I wish Siemens offered an option between the 2402 and 2420 that added afull duplex speaker phone in the base unit, but not voice mail, cordedhandset, etc.

AT&T TL76108 5.8GHz TWO-LINE Digital Corded/Cordless Answering System (Titanium and Metallic Charcoal) Review

AT&T TL76108 5.8GHz TWO-LINE Digital Corded/Cordless Answering System
Average Reviews:

7/20/09 UPDATE: System still terrific. Considering purchasing more handsets and replacing other, older phones around the house. Forgot to mention the very neat "clicky" quality of the base sets buttons. Very enjoyable clicky-ness! Still sad about the missing clock and calendar on the screen but have learned to use the hold function without searching first.

5/9/09 UPDATE: The phone system is terrific! Excellent sound quality, easy to use, handset never a problem. Still wish screen had a digital clock and calendar.....

ORIGINAL REVIEW: Why must buying a new phone be as complicated as buying a new car? Can't we go back to the good old days of Ma Bell? When all phones were black and only made and received voice calls.

The search for a new, two line phone was about as painful and confusing as anything I have gone through (except a recent coffee grinder debacle Breville BCG450XLConical Burr Grinder).

From past experience, I identified two manufacturers that make phones worthy of owning: Panasonic and AT&T. Serious phones, built to last. The rest, V-Tech and Uniden are, in my opinion, at the "disposable" level. A lot of features for not very much money but after 2 years they are ready for the trash. I am also not interested in anything made by Siemens because after spending a fortune on one of their phone "systems" several years ago, the damn thing started to disintigrate about 5 minutes after the warranty expired.

I wanted a corded base phone because after several blackouts and 9/11, at least one corded phone per household is de rigeur (see note on cordless battery below). I wanted at least one cordless handset because thats the only way I can get a working phone in my livingroom. I needed an answering machine that would answer both lines. I wanted a speaker phone option for those dark times when you are on hold with tech support for 5 hours. I chose 5.8 GHz because the DECT 2 line phones don't seem to have their bugs worked out and who needs to be a pioneer/early adaptor for something that you absolutely positively need for work?

I chose the AT&T TL76108 5.8GHz TWO-LINE Digital phone AT&T 5.8 GHz TL76108 Digital Expandable 2-Line Corded/Cordless Phone w/ Caller ID and Answering System
because:
1) The price was relatively reasonable...$150 deliverd.
2) It included one cordless handset in the price. Panasonic makes you buy each handset for $89 in addition to the base station. Gee wiz!
3) It had more options/feature than I would probably use or probably be able to figure out when sometime in the future, it occurred to me to use them.
4) It was offered for sale by Amazon. This is extremely important in case you need to return the phone because it turns out to be a worthless piece of junk.

I received the phone a few days ago and I am pretty pleased with it.It is very easy to set up and the hand set registered immediately. The sound clarity is very good and there is an easily accessable volume control to make things louder or softer when necessary. The base phone is tilted up so that you can read the display screen easily. The buttons are big and clearly marked. The hand set is not as flimsy as some and the sound is clear and even, with very little, if any, static or interference.

Things I don't like are basically minor irritants.
-The hold button is a soft key feature that only appears on the screen when on a call. There is no actual "hold" button.

-The screen is only lighted when the receiver is lifted.

-The dark screen issue is not that much of a problem as it does not even display the date and time of day.....this has always been a nice feature of phones with LED screens. Especially if you have time/space/continuum issues. Was this an oversight? Is my screen malfunctioning? No. What the screen displays when the phone is "at rest" is "BASE". How helpful! I had no idea it was my base phone! I can go in and name it something else, like "Useless" or "My Office Phone" but why bother? I do know that if I use the intercom to reach one of the other cordless handsets, that handset will know that "Base" is calling. But really, why no time and date?

-The screen does not display the time elapsed while on a call.

-There is no way to program the use of the "1" into the phone's memory. You can set up your directory of #s with the "1" as part of the # but when a call comes in and you see it in caller id.....even if you have already entered it in your directory with the "1", when you hit the "RDL" soft key to return the call, there is no "1" inserted. This is very disappointing! AT&T's solution is to have you hit the "#" key after you hit "RDL" to get a list of possible # variations (with/without 1, area code, etc). This is not quite intuitive but I will probably get used to the drill or go mad in the process.

-There are three separate pairs of "Line 1", "Line 2" buttons on the base set (and no hold button, but I already mentioned that). There are the two "On/Off" buttons where you can, you know, turn the line on or off. There are two "Mailbox" buttons for listening to your messages. And there are the "Line 1" and "Line 2" buttons for actually answering the phone. Very confusing and yes, I have already pushed the mailbox button accidently when I thought I was making a call. Lord knows what my husband, who never reads the instruction book, is going to do when he tries to use the phone. Hah!

-The base set can not be wall mounted.

I do recommend the phone. There will be an update after I have had a chance to kick the tires a bit longer.

3-27-10 NOTE: The AT&T Phone that I purchased is slightly different than the one photographed above! I have included two photographs to show that the phone I received has three additional buttons on the right side of the base set: a "Mute" button a "Volume" rocker switch and a "Flash" button. I have also included a photograph of the display while the phone is "at rest".

3-31-10 NOTE: As other reviewers have rightly pointed out, this is not strictly a corded phone. This means that the base set requires connection to an electrical outlet inorder to work.

AT&T's solution to this problem is to provide a compartment on the base set for a spare battery that, when inserted and fully charged, will allow the user, during a power failure, to make and receive short calls for up to 40 minutes. This battery can also be used to quickly replace a low handset battery.

This is all well and good but should you wish to purchase one of these "optional" batteries, it must be "hunted down". No mention of this battery is mentioned in Amazon's product copy. Nor is it offered as something one should purchase at the same time as the phone system. The battery is the same model as the battery in the handset, but you don't know that until you purchase the system.

The instruction book specifies a AT&T model 102, part number 89-324-00-00. This no longer exists. It has been superceeded by model "00249.

Amazon sells a variety of these batteries that are poorly rated by customers. Reviews about "not quite fitting but if you insert a small piece of carboard...)turned me off. However, a highly rated battery is available on the same page, mixed in with the bad ones. It is from HomeTheatre 24, an Amazon third party vendor. This battery costs more than the others but is an AT&T branded product AT&T 00249 - Phone battery NiMH 700 mAh. Home Theatre 24 is not the "preferred" seller of this battery, you have to search the "More Buying Choices" box on the left in order to find them. The battery arrived in two days and it fit the base station perfectly.

GE 2-Line Speakerphone with Caller ID Review

GE 2-Line Speakerphone with Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had several different office phones over the past few years. Most recently, I purchased a Fanstel phone, after reading reviews and doing some research online.Unfortunately, this phone was more of a disappointment in that the speakerphone feature was horrible. Most calls could not be heard since every other word was dropped. So, I decided to research again and came across this RCA 2-line model.I've been using it for a few weeks and have been quite happy.I have one line, and therefore have not bothered with the 2nd line setting. It was easy to set up and use right from the start.Caller ID is large and backlit.Sound is very good through the handset and speakerphone. The speakerphone is loud and much, much better than the Fanstel. In fact, I can actually have a 2 way conversation with the RCA speakerphone.Saving names and numbers to the directory or quick access buttons is straightforward.I've attached a headset using the 2.5mm jack; an external amplifier is not necessary since the phone has one built in.Just attach your favorite headset, and start to use it.The volume setting for the headset is separate from the speakerphone, and this is recalled the next time you use that method to talk.Lastly, by simply pushing the down volume button, you quickly shut off the ringer for times when you don't want to be interrupted.Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and recommend this phone for home or small office use.

VTech VT2461 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System Review

VTech VT2461 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this phone for about 4 months now and have been very happy with it.The sound quality is very good and the phone has a number of nice features, and also has a nice contemporary design.A previous reviewer gave this phone a bad rating because the memory only allows for 32 digit numbers and the base unit will only accomodate 4 handsets. While this is true and may be a limitation for business use, it is not a limitation for most home uses.Besides the 2.4 GHZ, 3 mailboxes, 30 minutes of recorded messages, and the ability to have up to 4 handsets, this unit also stores a spare battery in the base unit which re-charges it.The spare battery is also used as a backup power source for the base unit if the power goes out in your home so you can still use the phone.I have also been pleasantly surprised with how long the battery lasts. It's no problem getting 5 hours of talk time between charges. And the speaker phone in the handheld unit, while not sounding the same as if you were speaking into the phone directly, works and is a nice feature. The phone is small and light weight which is another plus when clipping it onto your belt for use with the headset. All in all a very nice phone with a nice set of features.

In the VTech 2461, you'll find deluxe features accompanied by a nondeluxe price. Offering a digital answering machine, built-in speakerphone, and options for up to four handsets, this single-line system is an ideal choice for busy households. A four-line display provides plenty of room for information in the speed-dial registry, while the 2.4 GHz operation supplies a signal strong enough to use the handset inside or out on the lawn. Handset-to-handset operation allows families to find each other throughout the house, and the conference-call capabilities are convenient when out-of-town relatives call. VTech includes a one-year warranty on parts and service.

Cisco-Linksys RT31P2 Wired Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service Review

Cisco-Linksys RT31P2 Wired Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the Motorola ATA (analog telephone adapter). The voice quality was fine unless other people were downloading. Then I would have dropouts.I bought this product specifically because it support Quality of Service, reserving bandwidth when using the phone to maintain voice quality.

In order to take advantage of QoS, all traffic has to go through this router. No problem, I did my homework and ensured that it had all the features I needed; port forwarding, a DMZ setting, and IPSec and PPTP passthrough.I installed this in front of my current firewall, assigned my current firewall to the DMZ address, forwarded all ports, enabled IPSec and PPTP passthrough and I was all set - I thought.

My current firewall is also a VPN device - it establishes an IPSec tunnel to a matching firewall to another location. This works fine, the RT31P2's IPSec passthrough works well. All servers behined the RT31P2 are also functional, Web, mail, ftp, etc.Great!

But for 2 weeks I could not understand why no one could complete a VPN conection PPTP) to our Microsoft remote access server.Turns out the the "PPTP Passthrough" setting on the configuration menu (and in the manual) is for show only - it doesn't work.A search on the Vonage forums and a Vonage tech representative confirmed this.So even though I did my homework, downloaded the manual ahead of time, etc, I still have a paperweight - I have to go back to my Motorola ATA.Worse, Linksys says it's a Vonage problem, and Vonage has no plans to fix this issue.

As an aside, I bought the RT31P2 about 5 weeks ago (I can't return it for an RMA).Back then I found a number of sources that sold it.I just did another search and most have taken it off their web sites. Is the word getting around that this is a Mickey Mouse device? (No offense to Micket).

Product Description:
With Vonage, you can make phone calls over the Internet, potentially save on long-distance charges, and access a rich assortment of calling features. Plans start as low as $14.99 per month, and the Premium Unlimited plan offers unlimited calling to the U.S. and Canada for only $24.99. And it's easy to use--for making and receiving calls, Vonage works just like traditional phone service, with no special access codes or account numbers required.
Easy Hardware Connections

All Vonage plans let you enjoy the call features you've become accustomed to: call waiting, caller ID, voice mail, call forwarding, three-way calling, call return, repeat dialing, and reliable long distance... plus other features that may be new to you. For example, you can receive your voice mail as an e-mail attachment, and you'll have a phone number that travels with you. Visit www.vonage.com/amazon to see which plan is best suited to your lifestyle and budget. The low monthly rates are quite reasonably priced, in our opinion, and with them you may save considerably compared to traditional phone service. International calls are available for additional low fees, with one economical exception: calls from the U.S. to Canada are treated as domestic long-distance calls, rather than international ones. Vonage also supports short-form emergency 911 service, where available. (Dialing 911 requires activation and operates differently than traditional 911. See Vonage's website for details.)
The starter kit comes with a Vonage-certified Linksys RT31P2 router, avoiding the need for a separate phone adapter. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection (cable or DSL) and a touchtone phone. After setting up your Vonage account, you'll have instant access to two lines, each with a separate phone number--you can even assign them different area codes, subject to availability. You'll still be able to surf the Web while talking on the phone or receiving faxes.
The router allows you to connect up to three PCs and two telephones or fax machines, and they'll all share a single Internet connection through which you can smoothly transfer data of all kinds. While talking on the phone, you can still share a printer, make backups, or simply move your latest presentation notes over to your laptop. With easy Web-based configuration, all these options are available at the click of a mouse. Linksys backs the router with a generous three-year warranty.
What's in the Box
The Linksys RT31P2 broadband router with two phone ports and three switched Ethernet ports, a power adapter, a setup CD with user's guide, a network cable, Vonage plan and support information, a Quick Installation card, and a registration card

GE 29460GE2 2-Line Business Speakerphone with Caller ID Review

GE 29460GE2 2-Line Business Speakerphone with Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this phone a few days ago. I was VERY impressed with the intelligent layout of its features. Total learning time was less than 20 minutes. Someone put a lot of thought into making it easy to use. Of the many excellent features this phone offers, I did find several disappointed me (but not enough to return it!). These are:
1) On the first and only 2-line conference call I initiated, niether party could hear the other. Conferencing with 'home' quality phones always provides low level sound for the other parties. But this phone produced no sound for these particular parties.
2) The speaker phone's output volume is quite low, even on its maximum setting. With my computer's fans, it's only minimally acceptable. The receiving party said my voice quality wasn't bad, but similar to any other speaker phone, quite echo-e.
3) The headset feature is great, but, get this, the handset is dead while the headset jack is plugged-in. You must remove it to return use of the handset. You can switch to the speaker phone though while removing the jack, but, sheesh.
4) The Flash feature switches to the call waiting line just fine. But, I couldn't find a way to conference the call waiting person with the other party on the same line, as I could with my Sony phone. I kinda miss that ability, though maybe I haven't discovered how to do it yet (no mention of it in the manual).
Overall though, this is a premium phone with wonderful clarity and a solid sounding handset microphone (not 'tinny' like some phones). I really investigated alternative phones and this was in a class for twice its ... cost. Even with these particular disappointments, I'm impressed with the phone.
