Linksys by Cisco WRTP54G Wireless-G Broadband Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service Review

Linksys by Cisco WRTP54G Wireless-G Broadband Router for Vonage Internet Phone Service
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I don't write reviews on products very often.I'm more of a passive observer when it comes to on-line products. But my experience from this device has led me to (or should I say forced me to) write this review!!!I've been a network engineer for 5 years and I've also been a long time owner of the Linksys BEF11WS4 which proved to be a very worthwhile investment.I also setup Vonage service for my mom's home and for well over a year been totally satisfied. So when I saw this product, I thought to myself obviously why not get this as it combines the two very satisfying experience I've had.And so the nightmare begins.

I've had problems from wireless dropouts to the router freezing to the phone port not working.I have no idea who made this but it sure doesn't seem like it has the Linksys quality that I've been used to.Thats where I learned that if you want support for this hardware you have to call Vonage, not Linksys.I don't know how Linksys/Cisco got their name on this thing but it doesn't seem like it is from them.Neither is the quality on par with Linksys nor is the support provided by them.I've tried upgrading the firmware (this is sometimes done for you automatically by Vonage), I've upgraded the driver on my laptop's wireless card, tried dozens of different configurations through the web interface.NOTHING!!!Still get wireless dropouts, router freezes, and headaches to top it off.

If you are bent on buying this device please do some research on the web about it.You will find a plethora of information on it from a few websites and you will see my frustration in many others.I kept the router as it seems like Vonage is pushing it very hard from a marketing standpoint so maybe a real fix will be coming soon. But I decided to buy the WRT54G model which from the first few minutes of setting it up I can tell that this is a true quality product from Linksys. One thing I noticed right away is that the WRT54G operates a lot cooler than the WRTP54G.And ofcourse its been solid in its performance so far.If you decide to buy this, good luck, you'll need it.

Uniden DECT 1080-2 DECT6.0 Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System, Call Waiting/Caller Id, and Extra Handset and Charger

I had a Uniden 2.4 system which was becoming more and more burdensome as we added wireless products. It finally got to the point that every phone call had bad noise so I went searching for a system that would be clear as a bell. I was going to buy a uniden 5.8 tru when I saw this one that claimed it was interference free, since my main objective was this, I bought this system instead, the results have been crystal clear static free calls. Its wonderful.
The pros:No interfence; very small handset, 100 number phonebook, hands free on every phone.
The cons:Made for British market, answering machine voice is lovely English fenale voice, only has a 24-hour clock (no am/pm)and date is day first month second, no charging light on base or phone.

Spracht Aura SOHO Full-Duplex Analog Conference Phone with Expandable Capability Review

Spracht Aura SOHO Full-Duplex Analog Conference Phone with Expandable Capability
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this product from a 3rd party re-seller at Amazon and the unit I received was apparently out of date.I have Comcast VOIP and due to differences in the behavior of VOIP, the quality was poor.

Fortunately, some folks from Spracht contacted me after reading about my experience and they immediately provided me with an update. The updated unit is far better than the initial one.The call quality is very clear on both ends. The updated unit also has an update to the user manual that provides instructions on how to configure the unit for use with a VOIP system. This makes all the difference, in the default mode the quality with a VOIP line is similar to the older box.

I'm generally satisfied with the new unit, the quality is clear, the only minor complaint is that people on the remote end say I sound a little far away and ask if I can turn up my volume.I have the external microphones and the base unit.Hopefully this is just some trial and error to get the right positioning.

I would recommend that before you buy this speakerphone you verify if it has the latest firmware, especially if you intend to use it with a VOIP line.

Thanks again to the guys at Spracht for great support.

GE 26938GE1 900 MHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID/Call Waiting Review

GE 26938GE1 900 MHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID/Call Waiting
Average Reviews:

I used this phone as an extra one in the bedroom. While it is nice that I can turn the ringer off and the caller ID screen is lighted, there is no battery life.I have had the phone for about a year or less and have replaced the battery twice now.You cannot even talk on the phone for 10 minutes without the battery going dead.Standby only lasts a few hours off the base. The price is cheap but having to replace the phone every 6 to 12 months makes the phone more expensive.

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier Review

Brother IntelliFax 2820 Laser Fax Machine and Copier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're in the market for a fax machine this is the one.I also owned the Brother 2800.This is the new and revised version of the 2800.Apparently Brother does improve upon their faults. You can see my review on the 2800 and the downfalls. For a re-cap:

1. 2800 had paper jams when using old paper. The 2820 has a paper feeder like their printers which greatly reduces jams.(I also own brothers laser printer) Now I can use recycled (one-side already printed) paper and not have to deal with jams. Also 2820 holds much more paper in its tray, so you wont have to worry about running out.

2. 2820 has a new feed system which reduces jams when faxing out.I had problems faxing 20+ pages with the 2800, now none with 2820.However they say there is a limit to 20 pages (just add more pages as they feed through).

3. The only downfall is the toner is slightly more expensive. It does print more pages, but does cost a bit more.Fax machine is more expensive also.

Overall, if you don't want to deal with the 2800 problems then pay the extra money for the 2820 and feel confident with its performance. If money is an issue, get the 2800.Personally the few extra bucks is worth it over aggravation when trying to fax/receive.

Another added bonus feature:This fax can also connect to the computer through USB allowing to work as a printer.I currently have this set-up and works very well.Have no issues priting with this fax machine.Great feature if you don't want to buy a printer.(2800 does not have this feature)

AT&T 1719 Digital Answering Machine with Audible Caller ID Review

AT&T 1719 Digital Answering Machine with Audible Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After happily living with my trusty Panasonic KX-T8000 for 12 years, I decided to move the Panny to my other house to replace a tape-based machine that had gone kaput. So I needed a new one for my main house. My first criterion was that it must have audible message alert (who needs another thing to remember to check after a long day at work?).That really narrowed it down to just the AT&T.I had read here that of some problems that others had experienced, so I purchased it at BestBuy which has a liberal return policy. But I'm definitely keeping it.

First, if the power goes out, it definitely resets itself to auto-answer.The messages are saved, but the clock needs to be reset. But what's great is that all you need to do is call the machine and it uses caller-id to set the clock--incredibly easy to set (that is, if you have caller-id).

Second, I have not had any problems with voice quality or with deadair filling the end of messages.Voices are clear and they cut off when the person hangs up.No shouting is required.

Third, if the hardwired cord is too short, just go to Radio Shack and get an extension cord.My answering machine gets its signal from my adjacent fax machine, so the supplied cord is more than long enough.

The audible message alert is better than in my old Panasonic because it's less loud and intrusive. My Panasonic was so loud, that if I got a call while I was sleeping, I had to turn it off to be able to sleep again, even though it was two rooms away. The AT&T alert is much softer.I could probably sleep right through it, though it's loud enough to hear in the same room.

The AT&T definitely isn't as sleek looking or elegantly designed as my old Panasonic, but it's good enough (because of audible alert, it doesn't have to be in view all the time).I can't believe how cheap this thing is, considering how much it does.

This one is a keeper!

Follow-up (3/30/05): I noticed Amazon isn't selling it directly anymore and the third-party merchants are pricing it pretty high. If you're near Fry's Electronics, they often have it on sale for less than 10 bucks.

Product Description:
Manage your calls with versatility and convenience using AT&T's model 1719 digital answering machine. The device holds 19 minutes and up to 100 voice messages, all of which are committed to non-volatile memory so you'll never lose a message--incoming or outgoing--in the event of a power failure.
When you're home, take advantage of a variety features designed for convenience. Announcement monitor lets you hear, if you wish, the outgoing announcement and resultant messages. Number announce verbally announces an incoming telephone number before you answer the call. Number store causes the system to announce a caller's number as it plays back a message. Call screening/intercept lets you pick up after someone has begun leaving a message. Audible message alerts beep every 15 seconds when you have new messages. Multispeed playback lets you listen to messages at half, normal, or double speed. You can also choose to accept calls from blocked numbers or present callers with a message alerting them that you do not accept calls from blocked numbers.
When you're out, you'll enjoy full remote operation for everything from playing and deleting messages to recording new announcements, recording memos, listening to voice help, and setting the clock. A handy two-setting toll-saver feature lets you configure the device for 2/4 (so you hear just two rings before the machine picks up when you have messages and four rings when there are none) or 4/6 (four rings with messages, six without). A telephone is not required for operation, though telephone service is.
What's in the Box
Answering machine with single fixed RJ-11 phone-jack cable, AC power adapter, and a user's manual
Note: Number announce/store and the blocked-number feature require caller ID, a paid service from your local phone company.
