(More customer reviews)I ordered 2 Panasonic P-P592 NiCd (nickel-cadmium) batteries for an old cordless phone.That's what the picture on Amazon's web site showed. However, what I received were 2 Panasonic HHR-P592 NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) batteries.Note that Amazon themselves did not ship the batteries, but rather, they came directly from a third-party company.
The NiMH batteries are APPARENTLY suitable replacements for the NiCd batteries, but some battery chargers which work with one type may not work with the other.
I called Panasonic to see if the HHR-P592 batteries were suitable for my particular model of cordless phone, but they couldn't even find the HHR-P592 batteries in any of their own documentation.
After searching on the web, I came to the conclusion that the biggest thing I needed to be concerned with was possibly overcharging the NiMH batteries, if my charger happened to be designed to work only with the NiCd batteries.
I have typically kept one battery in the spare charging compartment in the phone's base unit, so when the one in the phone needs to be recharged, I simply swap it with the one which had been in the charger.There is no danger of overcharging the NiCd batteries, but based on the information from the web, I'm not sure if leaving the NiMH batteries in the charger indefinitely is safe.So now, I am only leaving the battery in the charger for about 24 hours.
So far, they seem to be working fine in the phone, and are not getting excessively hot when they're in the charger, so I believe they're ok.But, when these finally die, I will definitely find some other web site, preferably with a phone number that I can call, so that I can specifically state that I want the P-P592 NiCd batteries, with no substitutions.
Note that prior to buying these batteries from Amazon, I went to Radio Shack and got some type 92 NiCd batteries which they said were appropriate.They fit in the phone fine, and worked ok for a couple charges, but were actually loose when they were in the charger (they seemed to be tapered a bit differently than the Panasonic batteries).But after a few charges, they only ended up working for an hour or so before needing to be recharged.
In any case, if you have been using NiCd batteries and are not absolutely sure that any chargers you'll be using can also handle NiMH batteries, I would not order NiCd batteries from Amazon, since you may end up with NiMH batteries instead.
