Vtech DECT 6.0 Expandable 2-Handset Cordless Phone System with Digital Answering Device and Caller ID (CS6229-2) Review

Vtech DECT 6.0 Expandable 2-Handset Cordless Phone System with Digital Answering Device and Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very nice cordless phone system from Vtech.I got this model to replace a model with which I had become very frustrated. However, I am happy to report that this system has met my expectations which are:

* DECT 6.0 - to avoid interference with wireless internet
* Handset usability
* Easy to use answering machine
* Able to use both handsets on the same call

The call quality from this system is great. My previous system was on the 2.4 GHz frequency, and was always fuzzy. However that's not the case with this Vtech model. The caller on the other end is comes through crisply with ample volume.

On my old system, the "Talk" button was raised such that if you tried to hold the phone with your shoulder, you would almost always hang up on the call.I found this very aggravating, but the Vtech handsets pose no issues here.I find the controls fairly intuitive too.I have not had to consult the detailed user manual in order to do what I want and need to do.

I may be a bit behind the times on this, but this is the first phone system I've had where all setup is done from the handset.Have you ever been frustrated with the buttons on answering machine bases that do different things based on how long you hold them down? This is gone in this system. The handset has an easy to navigate menu system that mimics what I remember from my older Nokia cellphones.Playback can be controlled from the base station, but that is the only thing it does. You can also playback messages from the handset.

The final thing I was looking for might seem a little odd, but you won't notice it until you need it.On my old system, only one handset could be active on a call at any time. That is not the case with this Vtech system.

I don't ask my phone system to do a whole lot, but I do want it to do these things very well.I'm very pleased with this system from Vtech. If your needs are similar to mine, I think you will be too. Please feel free to ask questions in the comments section below.

Belkin 8 Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord Review

Belkin 8 Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Brief evaluation
----------------
This surge protector allows for up to 8 devices, including 4 'wide' DC adapters to be plugged in. It will protect them against power surges and, in addition, it can protect one phone line (RJ-11) and one coax wire if they are connected to pass through the Belkin surge protector.

My personal experience does validate the claims the manufacturer makes for the features that I am using and I can verify at this time. So far, I am happy and, in my opinion and based on its meeting real needs, good design, features and low price I recommend it as (in my view) one of the better it its class.

Soon after purchasing this unit I learned that for very little extra I could get and, in fact, I purchased the Belkin 12-Outlet Home/Office Surge Protector with Phone/Ethernet/Coaxial Protection and Extended Cord whichhas 4 extra outlets and comes with a true RJ-45 Ethernet support.

More details
------------
The following are noteworthy, in my view.

Positives:

+ TRUE 8-outlet capacity. Unlike the traditional surge-protected power strips where one beefy AC adapter would cover 2 slots, Belkin's device truly accommodates 4 AC adapters and allows for 4 more plugs to fit in.
+ 'Protected' green light (must be on) provides assurance that the surge protector is operational. When the green light stays off it usually means that the surge protector 'expired' while protecting your device from a power surge and it must be replaced ASAP. [The Belkin warranty promises a free replacement under its warranty terms if you meet the requirements and, it seems, you pay for shipping the damaged unit to Belkin and, possibly, the new unit to you. That's likely to add up to the price of buying a new unit from Amazon and, if you factor in the hassle, probably not worth it.]
+ 'Not grounded' red light (must be off) will warn you when there's something wrong. Belkin's warranty won't apply if the light was on when your devices got fried. I don't know if for a fact but I assume they have a way of telling if that was the case.
+ 10 ft. long chord. This is very important to me and it was one of the criteria that had to be met when I ordered this item.
+ 90 degree plug allows you to easily plug it into a busy 4-plugs wall outlet.
+ Clip for cable management. I find it useful.
+ Thin (one inch) and flat shape. Stands well on a table or on the floor.
+ Telephone and coax cable pass through for surge protection. I don't use these but I'm surprised that something this inexpensive has them.

[NOTE: The 'phone' jacks are RJ-11 (phone), not RJ-45 (Ethernet). I heard of installations where RJ-11 connectors are used for Ethernet but that is not the norm.]

Negatives:

- Other than encouraging the unrealistic expectation that Belkin would pay you big $$$ on connected equipment warranty, I can't think of anything bad.

Warranty
--------
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is a worthless warranty and 10 is one that's unbelievably generous, Belkin's should be somewhere around 2 or 3 - 95% of all warranties on devices this cheap are likely to be a 1.

They do promise to replace the item if it sacrifices itself while protecting your devices for as long as you can prove that you didn't do anything stupid, you have a purchase receipt and you ship the damaged item to Belkin at your own expense. It's not clear if they will charge you for shipping you back a new item. This may or may not be something worth pursuing. My impression is that you are not going to save a lot of money to get a 'free' replacement from Belkin and you are likely to waste a lot of time in the process. I'd probably buy myself a new one if the one I have now stopped working but it's good to know that they do have a 'lifetime' warranty. By 'lifetime' they mean the natural life of the product but 'natural life' is not precisely defined.

As far as being reimbursed for damage to devices that this surge protector was expected to protect, my impression is that you are not likely to get much if anything unless you can afford a lawyer and you are willing to sue. You have to meet a long series of requirements that are expressed in several paragraphs of techno-legalese.Rating
------
I will have to repeat myself stating that, in my view, this is one of the better surge protectors in its class. It loses one star for the 'Ethernet' confusion. I could have and maybe I should have removed one more star from the over-hyped warranty statement printed on the box but... as sad as it is, everybody does it and Belkin's warranty is better than most so, I am awarding 4 stars on an item that inexpensively addressed real issues I had with protecting several devices clustered in a corner of my basement.

Disclaimer:
I would call myself the opposite of a Belkin shill. After reading the news stories concerning some Belkin employees' attempts at promoting their wares at this site via employee-written reviews and other unethical practices I tended to stay away from the Belkin brand. In this instance, the price and the promised features were hard to resist and, to my surprise, I am very happy with my purchase.

AT&T 1080 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System Review

AT&T 1080 Corded Speakerphone with Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good: The four-way directional button and center "Enter" button become your primary tool to quickly and easily select features without the need to remember codes or special key sequences. In fact, all too often, these "non-KSU" phones will have buttons with two or more functions -- not this new AT&T series! The buttons on the phone are self-explanatory and only serve the one function for which they are labeled. All related feature options appear on the blue backlit LCD screen when you are in a particular mode that offers more options. For example, when you lift the handset and press the Intercom button, the top half of the screen prompts "Intercom No.?" while the bottom half of the screen presents you to optionally "Page" a single extension (instead of simply ringing it) or to "Page All" and broadcast your announcement on all the phones in your home or office simultaneously.

Another improvement, which is why I suspect these phones aren't backwards compatible with earlier AT&T "non-KSU" phones other than the 1000-series: the Intercom audio is digital, crystal clear. No longer will your Intercom calls be subjected to interference from a nearby radio station transmitter or other nuisance! With two phones side-by-side, you can detect a slight millisecond or so delay as an Intercom page is encoded on your phone to be then decoded on the destination phone. The sound quality is truly impressive and worthwhile. If you are currently experiencing any issues with your Intercom on older non-KSU phones, you might want to give a pair of these a test run.

The bad: If you transfer a call from one phone to the next, the caller hears nothing. No music-on-hold, no tones -- nothing but silence. If they had offered an option to play a soft double-beep tone to the caller every couple of seconds, that would have been a worthwhile improvement over dead-air. (However, the ATT 1080 does play a "Please hold" recorded announcement every few seconds when a caller is transferring to an extension by way of the built-in auto attendent included on that ATT 1080 phone. But even that phone leaves the caller with dead air if they are put on hold or transferred by a human instead.)

One big disappointment was with regards to the system recognizing when a caller on-hold had disconnected. I tried everything in my "toolkit" of test equipment, but it seems these phones just don't recognize (or don't care) when a caller that you've placed on-hold chooses to hang up before you return to the call. The system will continue to keep that line blinking on-hold until you retrieve it -- often to the frustration of loud dialtone in your ear.

The ugly: When integrated with an ATT 1080 with the "SYS EXT" voice messaging feature enabled, trying to figure out how to listen to your messages on any phone except the ATT 1080 is a huge headache! For a phone system that is so "menu-driven" by that directional navigation and "enter" button arrangement near the LCD screen, it is irritating to have to dig out a reference card to use this ATT 1070 phone to listen to your messages in the mailbox reserved exclusively for your extension but actually recorded and stored on the ATT 1080 voicemail/answering system. It just seems to me this could have been better thought out!

My guess is that AT&T would probably "recommend" that you purchase an ATT 1080 phone for every person who needs a voicemail/answering system, instead of using one ATT 1080 to serve voicemail for multiple ATT 1070 phone users as their advertising suggests.

Conclusion: Overall, this is a great telephone. All features worked beautifully, each button pressed produced the expected result -- press the Transfer button while on a call, the LCD prompts "Transfer line to ?". By keeping one function per button, and also utilizing the navigation menu-driven options through the phone's display, anyone can easily figure out how to do anything on these phones without ever needing to read any of the documentation.

The speakerphone sounds nice, although the volume of the speaker could've been louder (in my opinion). Each phone allows you to control the ringing tone, volume, and delay ringing options for each line individually. Believe it or not, that level of control of line ringing assignments are usually reserved for KSU systems only! Intercom calling worked flawlessly. All-Page was loud and very practical for a busy home with office, or larger retail store.

Unbelievable that any phone sold today does not support Caller ID - even more unbelievable that the product information listed on Amazon does not mention this anywhere. Only after your receive the phones and discover this 'defect' will you notice the little red note on the upper right-hand corner of the box: "Does not Support Caller ID". Would be nice if the product description had mentioned this.

AT&T White Corded Speakerphone (CL2909) Review

AT&T White Corded Speakerphone
Average Reviews:

Just went and bought this phone today after considerable research. And so far it is meeting expectations.

My needs in order of priority:
1.No electrical hookup - should run off phone line, like all old analog phones
2.Need speaker phone for occasional conference calls
3.Need Caller ID to screen calls.
4.Nice to have - programmable phone number bank
5.Ringer control - should be able to turn off ringer or make it go to visual
6.Should be able to put caller on hold or mute.
7. No answering machine neededNeedless to say - this was the only phone I found whichcould meet all of the above. The need to have one phone in the house which can be used if the electricity is off just made all the other phones miss out in some other aspects in the list above. Mostly they wouldnt have caller ID. All these features in this phone work on 4 -AA batteries and we will see how the consumption rate on that is.

It was easy to setup, though the wall mount , did have an issue with the hook for the handset. It just wouldnt slide out.... had to bring the screw driver and pryit loose.

Next, I will programme the frequently dialed numbers and see how that goes. It seems fairly easy from the instruction book.

So far I have tested the speakerphone and the handset - the sound quality is great! Our previous phone was introducinga lot of static in the calls, so this is a good replacement and I am happy with the price. ANd we have freed up one of the electrical sockets as this needs no electric connection!!

I have two of model 25404RE3. Needed a 3rd for home office use. Ordered this 'new' model by mistake. The two 25404RE3 phones work fine, but the new 25414RE3 doesn't. First, the phone recognizes only line one when a two line cord is plugged into the first jack. To get it to work for my two lines, I have to plug it into the second jack and use line 3 and 4. Second, it doesn't intercom at all with the 254o4RE3 models. This needs to go back!

Also, FWIW I like the aesthtics of the older model better; sleeker looking buttons and less use of dark colors.
