I got the version of this phone that comes with 4 handsets instead of 3 (DS36322-4).My main reason for the purchase was that you can link your cell phone to it through bluetooth. This feature works well.I no longer need to carry my cell phone around the house. It has a custom ring and a visual display to let you know if it's your land line or your cell phone that is ringing.I was also able to easily download my cell phone address book so I can make calls through the vtech handset.Calls are crystal clear.Battery life seems good.

Sadly, the good news stops there. As another reviewer mentioned, you can't rename the handsets. That means if you want to page another handset, you need to know which one by #.You also can't do a broadcast page to all handsets (despite being called "intercom").Also, you can't customize the ringer by time of day. With my old phone system, for example, you could set the handset in the bedroom to automatically not ring at night. The menu options aren't very intuitive.I've had to refer to the manual many times.

The problems are easy things to fix.I would have easily given the phone 5 stars if the annoyances weren't there.I can only assume that vtech hasn't done any consumer testing or listened to any feedback.

The phone looks cool, but it stops there.

The battery does not hold charge and VTECH customer support has repeatedly ignored requests for a replacement.I would shop other phones. This has been a disaster of an experience.

The sound quality is also poor.

I love this phone.I'm not concerned about the shared phonebook as some other reviewers, so I will not comment on that feature.I was looking for a phone with great sound quality and a great form factor (one that felt really good in the hands from an ergonomic standpoint), and this phone is it.The sound quality is very crisp, and this is the first cordless phone with a built-in speaker in which the speaker phone actually works and is crisp and clear.Fantastic!

My son gave my daughter and me this four line V-Tech system. It is great. You can carry one phone around with you while the others are on the bases so you don't have to run to the phone when it rings. We had a cordless phone, but these phones are small. If you misplace one, you can call it and find it by its chirping. Also, if I need to reach my daughter, I can call her through this system. You can store phone numbers, redial, look to see whom you called. It has so many features that I don't think we found them all. This was the best gift I have received!

I was actually looking for a DECT 2 line phone without an answering machine but it's not available, so I settled for two of these. I like this phone a lot, a logical interface, easy to program and has all the features I need. Reception is excellent and I was able to stay connected from my mail box across the street. Since it runs in a special bandwidth set aside by FCC for cordless phones, there is no interference from any of the electronics I have piled up around it. The handset is lightweight and compact, not much larger than a cell phone. I have had very good luck with Vtech products for many years.

This is my 2nd vtech phone. I purchased because I needed 6 total extensions and I liked how they looked on the internet. I also thought the bluetooth feature would be nice.

No one in my family likes these phones (wife, son, daughter).

For example, the base station has very tiny red symbols on black that are very difficult to see. None of the buttons light up, so, even in a bright kitchen, you never know what buttons to push to forward, delete, skip, etc. without getting inches from the unit.

The handsets are also always dark, and only light-up when you pick them up. If you need to enter numbers, #, etc. when ordering something, you cannot see the numbers. You have to wait for the phone to light-up again.

We've lost many calls when picking up. For some reason, the phone disconnects when you touch "Home/Flash." There is no "Talk" button, and, we always have to rethink what to do with this phone since it is not like any other phone (work, cell, etc.).

The sharp square corners can actually dig into your ear when talking on the phone for a while too.

Overall, the phones look and sound great. They are just not easy to use, and my family is not happy I bought them. They want the old vtech phones back.

VTech VT2461 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System Review

VTech VT2461 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

I've had this phone for about 4 months now and have been very happy with it.The sound quality is very good and the phone has a number of nice features, and also has a nice contemporary design.A previous reviewer gave this phone a bad rating because the memory only allows for 32 digit numbers and the base unit will only accomodate 4 handsets. While this is true and may be a limitation for business use, it is not a limitation for most home uses.Besides the 2.4 GHZ, 3 mailboxes, 30 minutes of recorded messages, and the ability to have up to 4 handsets, this unit also stores a spare battery in the base unit which re-charges it.The spare battery is also used as a backup power source for the base unit if the power goes out in your home so you can still use the phone.I have also been pleasantly surprised with how long the battery lasts. It's no problem getting 5 hours of talk time between charges. And the speaker phone in the handheld unit, while not sounding the same as if you were speaking into the phone directly, works and is a nice feature. The phone is small and light weight which is another plus when clipping it onto your belt for use with the headset. All in all a very nice phone with a nice set of features.

In the VTech 2461, you'll find deluxe features accompanied by a nondeluxe price. Offering a digital answering machine, built-in speakerphone, and options for up to four handsets, this single-line system is an ideal choice for busy households. A four-line display provides plenty of room for information in the speed-dial registry, while the 2.4 GHz operation supplies a signal strong enough to use the handset inside or out on the lawn. Handset-to-handset operation allows families to find each other throughout the house, and the conference-call capabilities are convenient when out-of-town relatives call. For the money, this is the best phone system I can think of for home or small business use.The 2431 (base unit) has a speakerphone, which makes it two phones in one, as it has the ability to intercom between the base unit and the handheld. Then we bought a 2420, so we have a 3-point intercom system. As we live in an older home, the intercom and the ability to place a phone where we wanted without running phone cords was important to us, and I spend a lot less time screaming around the house to call the family members. We will purchase two more 2420s in the future, to intercom easily throughout the house. The 2420s run off the base unit, and don't need a phone line, which is fantastic not to have to pay the phone company to run lines where we want the phones. Also, the VTech handsets each have Caller ID, which is a very handy feature, they show when another handset is in use (in case you don't have call-waiting, at least you know when someone is excessively tying up the hone line), and the speakerphone on each handset is perhaps my favorite feature. We have eliminated all the corded phones in the house in favor of this system, which has clear connections even outdoors, and two houses away from us.I can send the kids to the neighbors, and can page them from the 2431 via the intercom when they need to come home.Best of all, the original 2431 handset we bought flew off the hot tub in a sudden windstorm, the battery and battery cover landed in the pool (managed to catch the phone itself), and after the battery dried, it still worked!A minor ding on the antenna did not affect how the unit performed. We are all pleased with the features of this phone.

And you'll enjoy the sleek design, compact size, and light weight.
Set up your VTech base station, then choose another location foryour supplemental 2420 handset. Mobile hands-free calling is essentialif you spend a great deal of time on the phone. With the advantage of the extra handset, you can always be near a phone--whether you are at the pool, in any room, or out on the factory floor. There will be no more running to catch a call and just missing it at the last ring.
Operating on the 2.4 GHz band, your 2420 keeps conversations crisp, clear, and uninterrupted, even as you work throughout the house, garden, or office complex, as this higher-frequency signal offersgreater clarity and longer range than older phones operatingon a lower band could. This phone has the absolute WORST sound quality of any cordless phone I've ever used. There is static and feedback. You can even hear an echo of your own voice back through the ear piece.

On the plus side, the phone is really cool looking. The lights on it and the color are what drew me to it. I just knew that this was the phone for my daughter. I had high hopes for it as it matched my daughters new room really well. Even she doesn't like talking on it.

When an 8 year old can tell the sound quality is too bad to bother with, you know it is bad.

I would not recommend this phone.I bought it for a small office. If you are talking on line 1 and line 2 rings, the handset beeps in your ear with every ring and interrupts line 1 creating segments of dead air, much like call waiting does.Very annoying in a business setting where the second line can ring multiple times during a business call. When I called vtech to find out what was wrong, I was told nothing was wrong, that was how this phone worked. This is worthless as 2 line phone. Also sound quality is like talking into a tin can.

My last couple of phones have been made by Panasonic. I've recommended them to others and everyone has been happy with it but over the years they all have had the same general problem: the buttons become unreliable or require you to press really hard to get some digits to dial. I researched several models for quite a while, checking prices online and looking at them in stores. The features that are important to me are single entry phone book which propagate to all phones, speakerphone, intercom, easy caller ID viewing and redial, a sturdy phone that isn't too tiny to make it hard to hold, a small base station that doesn't take up a lot of counter space and of course good wireless range. This phone meets all of these requirement and the buttons feel like they will last a long time. They also have a magnify type lens on the buttons that make it easier to read the small letters associated with each button.[...].

BOTTOM LINE:You've probably already discovered the lack of full-featured consumer-level cordless phones out there, especially in the 5.8 GHz category and that you really have to move into the SOHO dual-line systems and spend a good deal more to get a full-featured phone. But the bottom line is if you are looking for a full featured, single line, consumer level cordless phone w/ an answering machine built in, this is it - it's not perfect, but you don't have many other options in this price range.
THE ALSO-RANS:Panasonic KX-TG2593 - feature-packed, but 2.4 GHz and bad quality reviews (just releasing 5.8 GHz line - probably will have same quality issues).Siemens 4215 - great form factor and feature-packed, but 2.4 GHz, no headphone jack, no base functionality and lukewarm quality reviews (pricier SL3501 and 8800 lines have headphone jack but are 2.4 GHz).CIDCO's 2.4 GHz D271's - almost perfect feature set but no answering machine and not in same price range (only marketed through yourlocal Bell company so you're not going to find a deal).
AT&T phones are not made by AT&T - they are designed and marketed by the VTech (maker of VTech phones like the 5831) subsidiary Advanced American Telephones under a licensing agreement with AT&T.My guess is AAT was a Ma Bell spin-off years back that VTech acquired so you are probably still getting some of the quality you associate w/ AT&T.Enough trivia...on to the phone:
PROS:
-Call quality/construction - can't overemphasize this (base sits right by my computer setup and still have great call quality)
-Full-duplex speakerphone:you can hear and be heard at same time (an uncommon feature on consumer speakerphones)
-LCD/Phone Book on base
-3 different mailboxes for different family members
CONS:
-No Speed dial:No one number/one touch speed dial from either base or handset - they really dropped the ball on this one. However, dialing from phone book takes as few as 3 button pushes.
-15 minutes answering machine record time seems pretty low (all of Siemens' lines have 30-45 minutes)
OTHER ISSUES:
-Message waiting indicator flashes neon blue on both base and handset - a little much for me but some may like it
-Inability to share phone books between handsets is a neutral:small business may want the same phonebook on all handsets; family may want parents/kids to have separate phonebook
-Wi-Fi:phone transmits at 5.8 GHz base to handset but 2.4 GHz the other way.If you have Wi-Fi this may be an issue as 802.11(b) transmits at 2.4 GHz.Possible future migration of Wi-Fi standard to 802.11(g) at 5.8 GHz is less of an issue because that frequency apparently is less congested than 2.4 GHz.
Note:I actually purchased the 5830 (but tested 5840 also). If you need the digital answering machine (b/c you don't have local phone company voicemail) go with the 5840 but you won't get the talking caller ID or a keypad on the base that you get with the 5830 (see my review on the 5830).
The top contenders in this category each have something (different) missing. In this price range, go with the AT&T 5840 (or the 5830) and be done with it before you drive yourself crazy as I did.

Product Description:
This innovative cordless telephone from AT&T operates on the powerful 5.8 GHz frequency. Its classic design provides comfort and ease of use along with advanced features, including a three-mailbox digital answering system, adjustable sound settings, the ability to run up to six handsets (one included, five optional) with only one jack, and speakerphones in both the handset and base.
The dual-band (5.8 GHz/2.4 GHz) design allows the base unit to transmit with more power in the 5.8 GHz frequency band and with greater efficiency at 2.4 GHz. The phone's true duplex transmission keeps the incoming and outgoing signals from interfering with each other.
The LCDs on both the base station and the handset provide caller ID/call waiting information (provided you have a subscription to caller ID service through your local phone company). The 5840's expandability with up to five additional handsets eliminates the need to hard-wire multiple extensions throughout the home. One phone jack and one power outlet are all you need to connect the 5840 base station and handset, while each additional AT&T 5800 handset requires only a power outlet for its compact charger/cradle. Calls can be transferred from one handset to another.
The 5840's enhanced audio technology derives from advances in acoustic design that have improved the frequency response relative to conventional cordless phones. The Sound-Select feature offers four different audio settings: bass, mid, treble, and natural.
The handset receiver lights up with incoming calls and can also be set to vibrate. It stores 50 names and numbers and works with your caller ID service to remember the last 50 callers. A spare-battery charging system enables the telephone to work even in a power outage. Choose from eight ringer melodies. Use AT&T replacement battery 2401.
