Panasonic KX-TG2500B 2.4 GHz Water-Resistant Cordless Phone (Black) Review

Panasonic KX-TG2500B 2.4 GHz Water-Resistant Cordless Phone
Average Reviews:

I bought the 2550 model (the one with Caller ID, but noanswering system). I like the phone pretty much overall, but there aresome things I would like to mention.
1) The Talk button itself is not illuminated; it's also a little small. However, you can answer a call by pressing any of the dialing buttons (0-9), which are illuminated. Still, I think they should have illuminated it somehow.
2) You WILL notice some clutter next to the big blue button: too many labels, and too many other surrounding buttons in such a small space just lead to initial confusion. Thankfully, I've almost gotten used to it.
3) The ringer volume only has 3 levels: low, high, and off. I think there should have also been "med" and "very high" settings to choose from. The receiver volume has low, med, and high settings. The battery strength has low, med, fully charged, and "recharge" indications.
4) The Caller ID function, as well as the Voice Mail indicator function, seem to work just fine. I like the fact that each function is associated with its own distinct light on the base unit.
That is, if you get a call, then the Caller ID light on the base will flash red. If that caller also leaves you voice mail, then the Voice Mail light on the base will also flash red.
There is also a separate Voice Mail button on the handset where you can store your Voice Mail access number/password...
5) Luckily, the display is backlit and can easily enough be read in the dark.It shows you the number of new calls you've received, as well as an indication if someone left you voice mail.
6) The Caller List can hold 50 names and numbers, plus date and time for each. If the same person calls you twice, then their name and number will only be listed once with an "x2" (as in times 2) notation next to it. After you review an item in the Caller List, a checkmark is placed beside that entry.
7) The Directory (where you store your own names and numbers) can hold 30 entries. You can use lower-case letters and special characters in the name fields, like "Mom & Dad". You can also copy an entry in the Caller List over to the Directory.
8) I haven't used the Call Waiting functions at all; I just don't have that service available to me right now. Nor have I experimented with the phone's range (outside my apartment).

NETGEAR DGND3300 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router with Built-in DSL Modem Review

NETGEAR DGND3300 RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router with Built-in DSL Modem
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everything in a review of a device like this is really a review of the device firmware. And the firmware is still in development. Some features, like USB and file sharing, are just starting to work. If you are a Linux guru and want an advanced router, you can have some fun with this right now. If you are a less sophisticated user, it might be better to wait for a later firmware update.

As I write this, the router firmware release is V1.1.00.32_1.00.32NA. You can see if there is a later firmware release at Netgear's web site. Router version v1 on that site is for the USA, v2 is for elsewhere.

This firmware release did not come in the box. I had to upgrade the firmware - actually, the device offered to upgrade itself when I visited its set-up web page after I'd gotten it working with my DSL connection.

The USB port had a black label glued over it, saying that it would work only with an upcoming firmware release. I peeled that off.

I am 11000 wire feet from the telephone office, which limits the speed I can get using DSL. This modem synced to my ATT ADSL at a rate higher than my my Zoom Telephonics XV6. 3008 KBPS at 6 dB s/n, vs. about 2600 at 6 dB for the Zoom, which was significantly more flaky at that rate. Actually, the command-line ADSL utility says it is synced at a "max" download rate a bit higher, and a "max" upload rate almost double - it could be that ATT is rate-limiting me, and I never reached their bandwidth cap while using the Zoom.

The "Guest" interface configuration for wifi wouldn't work in this firmware version. This is supposed to allow you to provide an open wifi network that doesn't have access to your internal LAN, while also providing a private wifi network for your use that has full LAN access. The USB storage device function wouldn't work because the "create a folder" button was grayed out. Linux gurus will be able to work around this bug, I discuss how later in this review.

The box runs warm. You might get longer life by mounting the unit so that it has airflow on all sides.

Netgear's release notes for this release are:

New Features & Bug Fixes

* USB support has been added. This feature can be accessed by clicking on the Basic and Advanced settings under USB Storage, with additional USB Settings available under the Advanced menu. For more details please see the ReadyShare document posted with this firmware release. You may remove the label over the USB port on the back of the unit to access the USB port.
* The Reference Manual has been updated and can be accessed by clicking on the Documentation link in the router management interface.
* A new Setup CD, version 1.2, has been released which adds Win 7 compatibility and fixes some default settings issues. The revised CD can be found at this link: [...]
* Fixed a problem where the WiFi speed limit didn't seem to work with WN511B: Up to 130Mbps was reported as a higher speed by the client.
* Fixed a problem where some invalid IP addresses were allowed by router for Remote Management.
* Fixed a problem where Port scan attacks were not logged.

If you run setup.cgi?todo=debug from the router's web interface, it will enable you to telnet into the router's busybox shell. If you know Linux, you can then make the router do all of the things that the web interface isn't ready to do, and more. For example, I mounted USB storage devices that, due to some bug, the web interface wouldn't handle. I suspect that some very complex routing is possible from the command line.

The fact that this is a Linux router is interesting because of the potential for alternative firmware such as that provided by groups like DGTeam and DD-WRT. They enhance the features beyond those provided with the factory firmware, and continue to support the devices with new firmware after the manufacturer has lost interest in its old products. DGTeam does not provide firmware for this model, but DD-WRT supports a different model which is essentially this unit but without ADSL. With the software from both groups it should be possible to cobble together a working alternative firmware for this model. I am the original author of the "busybox" Open Source toolkit used in the router, so I might be able to do that. I bought a second, used unit for development.

The router is based on Broadcomm ICs. Broadcomm is known for not releasing Open Source drivers for some of its hardware, although many of their chips have been reverse-engineered and now do have Open Source drivers. We're probably stuck with the proprietary driver for the ADSL modem chip unless someone does a whole lot of work, but I think the wifi chips and ethernet bridge now have open drivers.

Once you get into the command-line environment, there's a whole lot of functionality that is not exposed to the less sophisticated user. You can also figure out what the hidden web screens are. There's one to configure IPV6 at ipv6.htm, and one to diagnose ADSL at adsl_test.htm . There is a command-line program to tweak the ADSL parameters and read out ADSL statistics. It's not documented, but you can figure it out, and probably the most important information is:

adslctl configure --mod {option} (where option is a, d, l, t, 2, p or e)

* d sets the modem mode to G.DMT - adsl1
* l sets the modem mode to G.lite - adsl1
* t sets the modem mode to T1.413 - adsl1
* 2 sets the modem mode to ADSL2
* p sets the modem mode to ADSL2+

Here is a list of commands available from the shell prompt:

[ iptablesradvd adslctl killrc
ash killall rc.sh atm_monitor klogd reboot atmarplashrestore_config.cgi atmarpd led_app ripd atmctllld2rm bcmupnp lnrmmod bftpd login robocfg br2684ctl lsroute brctl lsmod rt2684d busybox lsofscfgmgr bwpingmd5sumsetup.cgi cat mini_httpdsetupwizard.cgi chmod miniupnpd sh cmd_agent_apmkdir sleep confmknod smbd cpmknod_sdsmbmnt
crond mlabelsmbmount ddmoresmbpasswd dfmount smbstatus dhcp6smount.ntfs-fuse smtpc dmesg multi_pb_appsyslogd dnrdmvtc dsldiagdnaptd test eapdnas touch echonbtscan true ez-ipupdate netgear_ntp udhcpc false nmbdudhcpd fdisk ntfslabel umount findntfsmount upgrade_flash.cgi freenvram utelnetd ftpgetpasswdvconfig greppingwget ifconfigpot wizard igmppotcounterwlctl import_ca.cgi pppdwps_ap initpppoe wps_det insmodpppoe-relay wps_enr ippptpwps_monitor ip6tables pszebra

All in all, it looks like this line of devices has potential. Indeed, it looks a lot more exciting than the "Open Source Router" line that Netgear promotes, and has no fewer proprietary issues than that line. With the reverse engineering that's happened so far, it looks like the only spoiler is the Broadcomm proprietary modem driver, and I guess I'll cross my fingers and hope someone with a lot more signal-processing competence than me spends some time fixing that.

Panasonic KX-TG2357B 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets, Answering System, and Talking Caller ID (Black) Review

Panasonic KX-TG2357B 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets, Answering System, and Talking Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Panasonic phone was a replacement for a previous 900MHz model that we'd had for a number of years.I checked out ratings for cordless phones at a leading consumer magazine's website, and Panasonic was by far the highest-rated manufacturer, though there are many fine brands of cordless phones.
What sets this model apart is the features included for a very reasonable price, especially the inclusion of a second handset. It's great to have what amounts to three phones in one, since the base unit includes a keypad of its own in addition to the handset it accomodates. The base has a speakerphone built in, as do the handsets, so you can work hands-free anywhere. The ability to plug in a headset to the handsets is also convenient, though I personally don't envision the need to do so.
The clarity of the sound is truly extraordinary, and one of Panasonic's main advantages. The Voice Enhancer technology is valuable in the event of a bad connection, but even without it the intelligibility is superb.
Another nice feature is the variable ring tones on the base unit as well as the handsets, including several melodies. You can also subscribe to a service where other melodies and tones are downloadable, but this seems a bit nonsensical. After all - it's a phone, not a stereo system!
The unit and the handsets are easy to operate, and the instruction manual is clearly written with plenty of diagrams.
You won't be disappointed with the KX-TG2357B - it's a great system, easy to use, great-sounding, and the price is right.
By the way, I didn't happen to purchase mine at Amazon, but wanted you to know that this is a fine product for your consideration.

Product Description:
The KX-TG2357B is a 2.4 GHz phone system that comes with a number of useful extras, including a second handset and integrated answering machine. By utilizing the 2.4 GHz frequency and digital frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, the phone is able to offer clearer reception at greater distances than traditional analog and even many digital phones. Plus, Panasonic's Voice Enhancer technology helps to reproduce a wider frequency range than many other phones do, resulting in more intelligible speech.
Caller ID has a 50-number internal memory and audibly announces the name or number of the incoming caller. A 30-number internal phone directory allows you to store your most frequently used phone numbers, while a display-and-dial feature lets you scroll through either the directory or caller ID lists and call with the touch of a button.
Additional features include an all-digital answering machine with a new-call indicator, so you know when you have new messages waiting. An intercom/paging function allows you to communicate with other phones on the system, while speakerphones on both the base and handsets allows you to communicate hands-free. Illuminated handset keypads make dialing easy, even in the dark. Headset compatible, the KX-TG2357B also comes with a belt clip and is wall-mountable, keeping your countertop clear from extra clutter.

This unit is practically the only telephone switching system available to a consumer. It seems to have all the features for routing voice or fax callsI had this unit only a few days though and wasn't able to verify that it would do all I wanted.

Setup procedures are confusing, despite a detailed manual. My first call to Tech Support didn't help at all, but the follow-up was very good. They actually called me!

RJ45 Splitter Adapter Cable Review

RJ45 Splitter Adapter Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This adapter is designed for office network patch cabling applications. It simply splits the eight pins in standard Cat5 cabling into two RJ45 ports.Since ethernet networking only uses four pins of the available eight in Cat5, this adapter will use the extra four pins for a second network connection. This means you must have TWO of these adapters, one connected at each end of a CAT5 patch, in order to use them correctly.
The previous reviewers were obviously victims of the poor and incomplete description given here. The manufacturer's web page (http://www.startech.com/Product/ItemApplications.aspx?productid=RJ45SPLITTER&c=US) gives a more complete description, but some networking knowledge is recommended to properly utilize this.

AT&T 1412 2.4 GHz Cordless Speakerphone with Caller ID Review

AT&T 1412 2.4 GHz Cordless Speakerphone with Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There may be better cordless phones but this had the right combo of required features that were hard to match in other products - it supports 2 lines, caller ID, has an alert light for phone company voicemail, had a keypad on both the base and the handset, speakerphone, etc. Also, it uses 2.4Ghz channel 1 and to date it hasn't conflicted with my two 802.11 Wi-Fi network access points running on channels 6 and 11.

The main annoyance so far is a loud clicking sound on the handset earpiece when a call comes in on the other line, even with the alternate line ringer turned off. If you get freequent calls on a secondary line that might be a consideration.

When you get the phone, check to see if it came with a Sanik battery. If so, plan on replacing it ASAP... my suggestion would be a Energizer ER-P510.If you don't, you will experience the static that many reviewers have mentioned, followed by run-down after 30 min of talking, followed by death at about 1 year.As shipped, I should probably rate this phone lower, but if it shipped with a good battery I would rate it 5-stars.

MOTOROLA MD491 2.4GHz Cordless Phone Answering System Review

MOTOROLA MD491 2.4GHz Cordless Phone Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I thought the Motorola name meant quality products--but after using this phone I now know better. The following are a few of the problems I had with this phone:

1. What's the point of having a Caller ID phone if the caller ID information DISAPPEARS after the SECOND ring...and just says "?ncoming Call"?

2. Sometimes the phone just does NOT ring on the cordless handset when a call is coming in...it just lights up.I can't tell you how many times I'd hear the corded base phone located in another part of my home ringing--and the handset next to me doesn't.

3. You cannot turn OFF or LOWER the volume on the ringing cordless handset or corded base if you don't want to answer a call. This is extremely annoying...and definetly NOT a phone for a home with sleeping babies or those who do not want to be disturbed.

4. You cannot listen to messages from the corded base phone PRIVATELY.It only works with the speaker phone.

5. If you want to call a name from your saved phonebook list...you have to scroll through ALL 100+ names to get to the one you want.On my previous phone all you had to do was hit the keypad number to the corresponding alphabet letter (example: #2 once for "a", twice for "b", etc) and it would automatically go to the beginning alphabet letter of the name you want to call.

If I hadn't tossed out all the packaging--I would have sent it back and gotten a refund. But now I am so fed up with it that it is going into the GARBAGE!!!

Motorola MD681 5.8GHz Cordless Speakerphone w/Answering System/Caller ID Review

Motorola MD681 5.8GHz Cordless Speakerphone w/Answering System/Caller ID
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading all reviews on the MD681 I was a bit concerned regarding motorola customer serivce, finding batteriy replacements, answering maching voice quality, and not having the handsets talking to the base (in terms of synching phone book numbers, and messages waiting.) that I have read about.
I decided to buy the MD681 after considering the Panasoni 5100. The other top line competing phone.
The 5100 reviews had me more concerned (LCD Screens not working, poor battery life, low volume on handset). These seem to be larger issues to me because if I paid all that money to have one of those features fail or not work properly to my satisfaction I would be very upset and the phone would be useless. These shortcomings of the Panasonic appear to be true quality issues compared to the feedback on the MD681 which are just personal preference issues related to system process and customer service.

I did speak to the sales rep at the electronics store before I made my final decision, and he said that he sells more Panasonic 5100s (they are popular brand among phones, have more bells an whistles) than MD681's but he see's a lot more returns of the Panasonic (quality issues).
Therfore my decision went to the MD681. Bottom line I decided that I wanted a simple expandable phone that is well built to quality standards, that is reliable, take messages, and will let me hear and talk well. I believe the MD681 meets all these needs.I do not need all the bells and whistles (offered by the 5100) to complicate something as simple as making a phonecall and having a conversation, and then need to be worried about the technolgy holding up to reliability standards.
I am not sorry one bit that I purchased the MD681.It is a very simple system, very well built, the handset and base sound quality is very good, and I was very surprised that the handset speakerphone mic and speaker worked extremely well. Reception is also very good. I have the base set up in my office on the first floor and I can walk through my entire house (up and down stairs) and backyard without losing any reception quality. Not even a hiss.
I did not find customer service with Motorola an issue. I did write them an email from their web site requesting where I could find a replacement battery (If I needed one) and recieved a quick response back. These batteries can be purchased through radio shack for about $14. This eliminated my concern regarding battery replacement which I don't think I will need.
The answering machine voice quality is good. I do not know what folks are complaining about. It works!
As for the central system and synching the handsets with the base in terms of phone book, and message waiting. I will get around those issues.Once the phones numbers are programmed I will have no issue there. As for message waiting, I'll just hit clear as necessary.
If you are looking for a solid, simple, and satisfactory expandable cordless phone product the MD681 is a sure bet compare to others.
:-)

Uniden DCT 648-2 2.4 GHz Expandable Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets, Answering System, and Caller ID Review

Uniden DCT 648-2 2.4 GHz Expandable Cordless Phone with Dual Handsets, Answering System, and Caller ID

Uniden DCT648-3HS
Pros
* Bright easily read display
* Phone is small and fits in hand nicely
* Message notification light on handset and blinking led on base
* Messages can be accessed on any handset as well as base
* Handsets can be named (example: bedroom, living room, etc.)
* Speakerphone in handset and base
* When using the speakerphone on handset and base the other caller couldn't tell that Iwas using a speakerphone
* Very good volume on handset, and equally as good using thespeakerphones on both handset and base
* Speed dial numbers can be assigned to numbers 1 thru 0 on the keypad
* Battery condition icon
* DirectLink Mode (a pair of handsets can work like walkie talkies away from the base unit)
* Room Monitor (one phone can call another and the second phone will turn on the speakerphone allowing you to listen in that room)
* Different ringers can be assigned to a phone number in the directory, so when that particular person calls that melody or ringer will sound.
Cons
* I was frequently getting a tinny sound coming from the handset. Also was hearing my voice in earpiece on the handset which is quite annoying.
* In the speakerphone mode on the handset the sound is constantly getting low then comes back.
* Only a 2 digit pin code for accessing messages (I wish phone manufacturers was use at a minimum, 3 digits. It wouldn't take much for somebody to guess a two digit number)
Conclusion
Uniden seems to have done their homework when designing their new 2.4GHz phones, but the issues with the handset and speakerphone detract from an otherwise excellent phone in my opinion.
Other Uniden phones that I've tested in the past have never had the issue with the tinny sound.I'm not sure if this tinny sound and the problems with the fading sound from the handset speaker phone are some how related.I originally thought that extra noise in my home office were causing the handset speakerphone fading, but when I went into another room that was quiet it still faded.I then thought that maybe the handset I was using was bad but I checked the other two the system came with and they also faded when using the speakerphone.Whether or not you can live with these shortcomings is up to the individual, but obviously sound is the most important aspect of a phone. If a phone cannot deliver good sound then all of the other extra's it comes with are pretty much useless.
So, can I live with the sound problems!I just don't know at this point. They are great phones..................but!!!!!

D-Link VTA-VR Broadband Telephone Adapter with Vonage Review

D-Link VTA-VR Broadband Telephone Adapter with Vonage
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was having some problems with my Linksys Vonage box in that I was getting random, and quite frequent line goes dead in the middle of a conversation.I decided to try this unit as it was quite inexpensive and the rest of my hardware is already D-Link.So, I switched out the Linksys and in with the D-Link and we've not had any dropped calls since.

Its nice that it is small/compact and doesn't take up much space and the wall wart AC adapter is smaller than what it replaced.Hope this one lasts longer than the Linksys box.

AT&T 1772 Two-line Digital Answering System Review

AT&T 1772 Two-line Digital Answering System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've owned an AT&T 1772 Two-line Digital Answering System for approximately 15 years.Earlier this year it developed problems that couldn't be solved so I started researching for a replacement. We were looking for a new unit but most all the answering machines today are built-in with the phone and we didn't want that--we wanted an old-fashioned answering machine. The few answering machines I found didn't have all the features we were used to with the AT&T plus most all of them got less than desirable reviews from customers. Finally I found one rebuilt AT&T 1772 on Amazon; it was expensive but it certainly had everything we were looking for since it was exactly like what we'd been using for years. We ordered it from the source listed in Amazon, received it in a few days, and it has worked fine every since. We've had it about 3 months.

GE DECT 6.0 Advanced Silver Cordless Phone with Goog-411, CID, ITAD, and 2 Handsets (28223EE2) Review

GE DECT 6.0 Advanced Silver Cordless Phone with Goog-411, CID, ITAD, and 2 Handsets
Average Reviews:

Just like the other reviewer, after a few days of installing the phone it began to have disconnect problems between the handsets and base.If it happens to one handset, it happens to the other as well. The remedy seems to be to unplug the power cord from the base unit then plug it back in.But sadly, the unit doesn't ring audibly when it's locked up;there are only visual indicators.

The phone's manual actually states that if the handsets lock up, then unplug the power on both ends, and remove and replace the batteries if this happens. So it's a known issue.Ugh.As far as I can tell, it happens randomly, and does not self-correct.

The bright red bar of light on the bases is too much.I've covered them with tape.

Otherwise though, the phone seems good.Battery life has been long if anything (8 hour calls).Sound is clear.Actually, one more thing is it can't be wall mounted, though the manual doesn't know this fact.

I'll be happy with this phone unless the disconnect issue ultimately has no remedy.

Caller ID with Phone Ring Controller Review

Caller ID with Phone Ring Controller
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this product for one primary reason - to block specific callers from ringing my phone. While this caller ID does have other fuctions, this was, for me, the only reason I purchased it.

Unfortunately, it failed at this job and even created other problems. Each time someone on the "blocked" list called the phone would ring for a fraction of a second.Doesn't sound bad, but it was.At times it was more jarring than having the phone ring normally. Also, at least once, one of the blocked callers got through. Not sure why that happened.

In order for this product to attempt to control who gets through and who doesn't it has to be the first thing connected to your primary phone jack. While that's logical, it also creates a problem that will be a negative for anyone with more than one phone. This caller ID blocked the ID information from being forwarded to my two phones. So the phone rings and the only way you'll know who's calling is to get up and look at the base unit that could be in another room or even on the other side of the house.Very inconvenient.

I used this caller ID for about a week and I knew it wasn't going to work.It barely did what it was supposed to and was more of a hassle than anything else.I contacted Smarthome, the Amazon distributor, and they were very courteous and took the item back and paid for the shipping back to them.I'd probably purchase from them again given how they handled the situation. But as for this product, I really can't think of anyone who would find it useful given its limitations.
